I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
I was looking through my catalog today and seen these tires and wondered how they would look on my ol 39 .. my dad used to buy a couple different tires for winter and one
was called a Knobby tire like this one shown and the other was walnut tread where they ground up walnut shells and put them in the tread of the tires, Not a bad price do ya think? just thought I would run it by some of your before I fill out the order sheet from this catalog ..

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
Not a bad deal, I say get 'em ordered! Say, where can I find one of those catalogs? Those knobbies might be a bit squirrelly on pavement but would make up for it in the slop. I remember walnut shell tires from when I was a kid in the PNW. I think they were all recaps but I'm not sure about that. I think my dad used them in winter.

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
I started a thread like this about cutting my dash, and I got accused of trolling Gopapa.
But what the heck, a guy has to have some fun sometime. If you buy those tires, don't go fast. I don't want to have to come out there and scrape you out of the ditch.

better warm up the ol' time machine
here's a set of old Allstates truck tires, same vintage tubes still holding air as far as performance, the C20 running these would get stuck in wet grass, lol

It's funny how fast we forget, but your right, those old tires would get stuck on level ground.

You could probably get that done at any one of the hundreds of closed stores.

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
I would post a photo of the catalog showing it is a 1937 Sears and Roebuck ,,,,
But like I said before I can't load a photo into this area of the posting ,,only the initial post and not after it's once posted I have had this catolog since 1962 ..found it in a old house that had been not lived in for years ,,it was under a wash tub and protected from the weather or mice or rats.. The womens dress pages has real pieces of cloth that is glued to the page on one of its corners for women to pick up and feel the fabric,, Stoker remembered the walnut treat tires ,, he bailed me out as I do not run into many people who knew about that,, now you believe me ,,huh?

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
Did they still have mail order brides in that one?
My great grandmother died young. Her son's ordered a mother from the catalogue, unknowing to my great grandfather. That would have been before 1922. When she arrived, much to my great grandfathers surprise, he offered to send her back, but she had nothing to go to, so she stayed, They had a son about the same age as my dad.

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
Yes it's a shame to see Sears destroyed by it's own investors. Whoever they are, they aren't hurtin' for money. It's not online sales, at 8.9% of total sales, that is killing retail. It's the ones who bought out these businesses and used them as a tool to make money their way...nothing to do with retail.

You could always call the police and ask them how they are.

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
Got to thinking about walnut shell tires and then I remembered tires with sawdust in the tread. Don't think those exist anymore but I was surprised to learn Toyo is making new winter tires with walnut shells. Also learned that some OK Rubber Welders franchisees got together to form Big-O Tires. Who'd of thunk it. Used to see OK Rubber Welders scattered around NW Oregon.

OK Rubber Welders.
I hadn't thought about them in years. How about Oklahoma Tire and Supply (Otasco) Western Auto

Never heard of Otasco -- probably a regional chain?
Used to have a Western Auto here in town. Hated to see them go away.

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
We had another small chain here back in the sixties.
They put in a second store here in Harrison and did ok from there. As I remember they were called Wal-Mart.

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
We have in our area the Les Schwab Tire Centers who started a tire business some years ago from Prineville Oregon ..I have bought many sets of tires from them and used their front end work and brakes too. .it was the first I seen where their worker actually run out to your car and ask you if they could help you ,, they are super good workers or they dont stay with Les Swab
Anyway .....at one time of the year a certain amouint of Beaf was given when you bought a set of tires,, as Les raised beaf also in Prineville ..

Re: I Wonder how well a tire like this will do
Hey Arky ! you been buying up trucks from out west or again ? lol
Yep,, Les Schwab ,,that's who I was talking about ,not sure how far down south or east they will go ,,I know they are now in Denver,, and Mike down south or Oregon might have them there When Les Schwab first started they were so popular that I thought all the other tire shops would fold ,,( not really ) but other shops caught on to the hired workers work ethics of being fast to put them new sets of tires on brings in customer and so now a lot of the tire shops are great as to getting you taken care of when you come in,,
