Re: Project: 1972 K30 Crew Cab Duramax

Yeah, that's the Chevelle. It's been nice weather lately, so I have been taking it into work often. Had it almost 20 years, since I was 14. She was my first vehicle.

Trevor, The truck is coming along nicely. Do you have a color combination in mind yet? Your Chevelle is looking good. Love the Black.

Re: Project: 1972 K30 Crew Cab Duramax

I finally broke down and bought my gauges. Expensive, but wanted the look of our era gauges. They were 12 weeks out from working on them. Figured I better get on the list. New Vintage USA.

Black exterior with all the Cheyenne Exterior trim, Bright Blue Houndstooth Bucket interior. I know the Houndstooth didn't get put on buckets, but I like the Houndstooth and I think it wears better than the scroll vinyl buckets. I am a big lover of different color combos. Get tired of all the blacks, tans, and grey interiors of today.

Trevor
What do you use for your Cab mount frame brackets for the rear of the cab?
Truck mounts or Suburban?

I used truck since I put the truck floor in the rear.

That is one sweet machine! I've got some really fond memories of a 70 from a friends car back in high school. We missed an opportunity to buy a Cortez Silver 396 a few years back one of my buddies put together. Still a bucket list car for us..

Re: Project: 1972 K30 Crew Cab Duramax

Long old road with the inner roof, but have made a huge dent in it. Going to go with a 3M flexible foam or sound deadening foam between the layers which will also act as a glue.

I already started on the frame that’s under it now. Still haven’t decided if I am going to splice in my longhorn frame yet or not to this one. As far as putting the engine in the frame, I am waiting to get my cab done before I move on to the drivetrain.

Still tacking on the inner roof. Finally dyed my Dana 60 Spicers. Should make the hubs pop.

I really like your gauge cluster. It's probably the closest thing to a stock appearing one I've seen yet.

Thanks guys, they weren't cheap I know that, but I wanted the truck to still have the nostalgic look and feel when I got behind the wheel.

Re: Project: 1972 K30 Crew Cab Duramax

Wow, everything is coming together just great. The truck is definitely gonna be a head turner. What did you use to dye the hub dials blue? I have a set of original faded yellow (almost white) spicer hubs on my Dana 60. I guess I could send out the metal outer parts and have them rechromed, I know yours were very nice when you bought them. Do you ever get anxious to finish the truck, or do you just take it one day at a time when you’re working on it? It really looks great. Kurt

Re: Project: 1972 K30 Crew Cab Duramax

I used to get anxious on finishing it, but after the surgery I just take it a day at a time and not stress over it. I still enjoy working on it, but will still redo items if I don’t like how it looks.
As far as the hubs go, I just clean my knobs and sprayed adhesion promoter and sprayed Krylon Fusion paint and cleared the knobs.
I had my chrome hubs rechromed to look that nice.

Re: Project: 1972 K30 Crew Cab Duramax

Trevor, forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between a Cheyenne roof, and any other ‘67-‘72 roof? Is the inner roof skin different somehow? I was reading back through the thread and saw you mentioning something about Cheyenne roofs? Thanks.

Re: Project: 1972 K30 Crew Cab Duramax

Originally I was going to run 2 separate headliners, so I chose 2 cheyenne roof skins. They had the holes punch for the headliner trim already that the Cheyenne/CST/ Cheyenne Supers had. I eventually wound up switching to one big headliner instead, as the headliners didn’t quite fall where I thought they would. Trevor

Trevor
You have built great strength in your roof.
Great Job.
The one Headliner plan sounds good.
I hope to start my build soon.

I'm a big fan of the square bodies but I got a little bummed when you got sidetracked, ha. Read your thread start to finish and am very impressed with the work. Congratulations on the wedding and the remodeled house looks great. I bet the previous owners would move back in if they could see it. Glad you got your heart fixed up too! I look forward to following this truck to completion. Did you do a thread on your square CC?

Thanks LT7A, yeah the surgery really stopped my movement on the truck and then life happened with getting married. It will get done though, still have a couple big pieces left to puzzle to buy. The square body just needs a paint job and I'll have it on the road. I finally picked my color for it, and I will probably paint it early fall this year.
