1 Wire vs 3 Wire Alternator.....
1972 K10 Burb W/a 1971 350, HEI
I am having issues with my charging system, I was told that 1 wire is the way to go. If I go to the 1 wire and get one at higher than 100 amps, will i be able to run a stereo, nothing crazy just a Retro sound with 4-6 speakers. is it worth it to just Un-F the three wire system, 3 people have tried to tackle it and it seems lost. Alternator: Good Battery: New Current: Closed: No draw. Regulator: New The hot wire is hot. The fuses under the hood are good. The blue wire is hot The ground is in place. ANY input would be appreciated. |

A problem with most one wires is that they quit charging when rpm's drop as you go to idle. Lights and other loads dim or slow. Not to fun on curvy mountain roads at night with defroster going.

I would go 3 wire. They are not hard to wire in the correct way. Plus if it does fail on the road they are much easier to find.

Thanks for the replies, I will dig into that thread, see if I can justify the swap, or start from square one and troubleshoot all over again.

3 wire alternator is the best way to go. The link Vette posted is a good read. Get you a Biuck Rievera alternator and hook it up. It's a direct fit for our brackets. 94 amps is way more than you will ever need for most trucks. The external regulator is easy to convert over to the alternator.
