Chevelle Gas Tank Swap

I have seen a few members use the 69 camaro gas tank, I am going to try the 70 chevelle gas tank, from what I have seen I believe It can be mounted directly under the frame without any spacers and the filler neck will line up with the bumper license plate.
I am going with a 5.3L swap in my 69 gmc, I found that Rockauto.com sales the 70 chevelle $115 and 69 camaro gas tanks for about $85, and they have both of them tanks with internal fuel pumps for LS Type engines they sell for $343. and the gas tank straps are $25.
I called the manufacturer of the tank, and asked them about the fuel pump and they said it will work with any LS3 type engines.
I ordered the EFI chevelle tank with straps, vented fuel cap, and corvette style filter wix 33737, and got it all for $434 shipped.
If it mounts and works as I hope it does I will post the pictures.

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap

Progress is slow, I'm hoping that I can get it installed tomorrow, the Trac bar should be delivered tomorrow, I also need the rear bumper. I'm going to drive to Hickory NC tomorrow morning to buy a rear bumper.

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap

A couple of thoughts on the Chevelle tank swap.

I own a 1971 and a 1972 Chevelle. I'm 99.997% sure they share the same trunk floor and gas tank as the 1970. I've owned countless numbers of 71 and 72 Chevelles and Monte Carlos but never a 1970. However I think the body and tank are the same. I know for a fact the dual exhaust in the Walker catalog is the same for 72 and 71 as it is for 70 because they didn't list a 71 or 72 small block with dual exhaust but did list a 1970. I ordered the 1970 dual exhaust for both cars and it fit like a glove.

I recently spent some "quality time" under my 72 on jack stands trying to lower the gas tank. The dual exhaust was in the way. I could lower it some but not drop it all the way because the filler neck wouldn't clear the bumper with the exhaust on. I could either drop the exhaust or the bumper. I gave up and put it back in place.

Today I took my tape measure out there as the 72 sits right next to the truck. My truck is a 1971 4x4 chassis. I'm not sure but I heard 4x4 frames are narrower than 2wd frames but I've never owned a 2wd truck so I'm not sure. Either way, the truck's frame rails from inside to inside is 33 to 34 inches. The Chevelle is 43 inches from inside one frame rail to the other. In other words my chevelle tank wouldn't fit inside the frame rails of the truck like it does on the Chevelle. Again this is a 4wd frame. Perhaps it fits inside the 2wd frame.

Another consideration is there is a relief stamped into the Chevelle's trunk floor for the filler neck to go through. A guy might have to "relieve" the back of the bed floor to make the filler neck work.

Then a guy would have to fab up a flip down license plate holder. You could get a rear license plate holder off of a junk truck and an A-body flip down plate holder and fab away.

I have photos but this forum decided that December 18th would be the day I could no longer upload photos using the manage attachments button.

I hope this helps.

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap

I got my new rear bumper and deluxe trac bar. There's a few issues with using this chelleve tank on a short wheel base truck.
1. The filler neck need to be shortened about 4"
2. The fuel sending unit, hard lines are also too long and hit the second cross member, To fix it I can either cut them or bend them. I'll try and bend them first
3. The rear bumper bolts up level to the frame, so if I mount the tank flush to the frame, I will need to modify the filler neck, and it will be laying flat, I'm not sure about that set up, I'm worried that the gas might leak out through my vented gas cap

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap

The tank in the pic I posted has a different filler neck.... plan on doing this after the holidays on my long bed, so I will first check the type of filler neck on the one I order and of course post pics....

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap

For the filler neck, I'm thinking of cutting a section out of it, and then putting a piece of hose between them.
If i can get some help getting the bed off my frame tomorrow, I hope to work on it tomorrow, if not it will have to wait till this weekend.

The tank is 7 3/4" at deepest... on my truck the bottom of the diff is roughly 10 1/2". Not sure of the drop on the rear of mine, it's just missing one leaf on stock leaf springs....
