Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Hahaha.

Pretty sure you'd beat me outta the hole. :P

Thanks for the compliments on the sound - apparently people don't like putting glasspacks on their vehicles anymore? Everyone says it has a very "distinctive" sound. Haha. I'll take it as a compliment.

But, you know what this means? I need to get new batteries, and do some tire chirping. Better yet, some tire obliterating - I have 2 new tires for the back end, so...I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend...

Bwahahha....

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Well! as promised!

We celebrated the one year of ownership with a bit of smoking.

The Surgeon General ain't got nuttin' on me.

first one. this was with a 4x8 sheet of 1/4 inch diamond plate in the bed. sucker musta weighed a good 500 lbs. hense the doggin' boggin' mild chirp.

not much of a burn, but a good idea of the sound.

and time for some smoke.

yepp. it was a good time.
but in hind sight, I've realized that the 3.07s are nice on the highway, but a real drag outta the hole. some 3.73's may be in order. shouldn't raise the R's too much on the highway, but will sure assist off the line. We'll see what happens.

Thats where she stands right now.

Truck sounds good Sam. I think your dad will say you laid enough rubber to replace the missing asphalt.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

haha, my dad approved whole heartedly - he was there with me, and gave the tires a few spins of their own, just to show me how it's done.

I was going to do it on our town road, but there is an old dirt road that follows the property line of our place and the neighbors, and for some reason a little piece of it right by the road got covered in asphalt. And, well, even tho it was laid down last summer, no one had driven on it. Oh, that sweet sweet smell of fresh tar a-burnin'!

haha, thanks Bill.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Well.

Nothing really productive has happened as of late. quite the opposite.

The tranny ist kaputt.

I got it pulled today after school, we're thinking the synchros on 2-3 went out, so I'll tear into it soon to see if there are any nice bits of metal and such.

If not, and the synchros look decent, we suspect pilot bearing, etc.

If it is the tranny, I have a replacement out of a '67 C10, just it's about half the length. So that means I'll take the driveshaft as well, after I get it fitted with a new carrier bearing, etc.

So, thats where she stands right now...on jack stands. heh.

I'll keep you all posted.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Haha, thanks Bill.

today was essentially my last day of school for the year, so it's not like it's a real inconvienence in not having 'er on the road at the moment. Woulda liked to drive her to graduation on saturday, but, thats ok as well. haha. we'll see what happens.

all in all, I still can't complain about the ol' girl. 39 years old, and this is about the worst that's happened. and in all honesty, I prolly had something to do with it. And yet, she has still never not made it home for me. Dad hit the tree, I drove it home. shifter broke, I drove it home. burnt up the clutch, but drove it home, lol. Tranny starts to go out, drove it home. Maybe if i hadn't taken that girl for a ride like she asked, the tranny woulda had a little more life in it..hmm...-shrug-. oh well. it was totally worth it. haha

alright guys, I'll post back when I get some more info on whats going on inside the 3 speed.

thanks for the encouragement as always!

-Sam.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Hurry up and get that thing fixed....it's actually going to be warm here this weekend. Summer is never going to get here.

My tranny went last month in my 2000 Silverado....good thing we have some friends with a lift, that would have been a pain in the pocket book.

Not to rob your thread Sam, but keep your eyes open for a nice 67-72 in WI. My dad is actually looking to pick up another one. It's hard to find one that isn't trashed or completely redone. He's just looking for a good driver.

I'm sure we'll find something at the Iola show.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Lukbrw - I'll keep my eyes open up here. Sometimes a good deal pops up, but mor than likely, your best bet is to watch Craigslist, especially around madison, milwaukee, etc. Of course, theres always Iola, haha.

Well, I forgot to update on here, so, time for some pics.

tranny, on my semi-permanant work bench.

Got the tranny apart, pretty simple. everything is tight, except for the brass blocking ring between the synchro and the gear. 2nd gear to be exact, where I was having problems. lol.

I don't think it's supposed to be all beveled and work, with little chunks of the brass floating around...so. thats my diagnosis.

So, I ordered a new blocking ring and a gasket kit from M&R Racing Equip. out of Waldo, Wis. Specializing in rebuilding 3 and 4 speed Saginaw's and Muncie's for dirt trackers. Yeah, who knew?

So, those 2 parts should be here thursday. $30 including shipping and COD. Now I just gotta get a hold of Napa, and make sure they have the input shaft needle bearings (Figured while I have it apart, might as well make sure thats not an issue, since there was some slop in the shaft). So, that'll be about another $10.

Then today I'm gonna pull the bellhousing, since everything else is out, and make sure the pilot bearing didn't get dinged up when we stabbed the tranny back in this winter when we replaced the clutch. My dad has a feeling that the pilot bearing may have been going out, which could have lead to the input shaft bearings starting to go, followed by the synchro, or something like that. So, cheap insurance, I suppose. Just gotta drop the starter, and a few bolts, and can check that all out.

So. thats where she sit's right now. Unfortunately I'm not going to be home this weekend, so she has to wait til next week to get back together and on the road. My family and I are leaving Friday morning to go to Iowa for my sisters graduation from Cornell College, along with helping her move out of her dorm. So, I'll be in and around Mount Vernon, Iowa, most of the weekend. haha.

Alright, I'll keep you all posted. I can't wait to get back on the road - I miss driving the 'er. Besides, theres a pretty girl who wants to learn how to drive three on the tree, and who am I to deny her that?

-Sam.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Alright, quick update.

Got the bellhousing pulled, went fairly smooth.

Now...just gotta go crawl under it, and get the pressure plate/clutch off to check the pilot bearing with the input shaft.

-Sam.

EDIT:

Just got the pressure plate and clutch out, now to check over everything.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Well. Finally made it back home after the endeavor to Iowa and back.

Got the transmission slapped back together today, and was about to put the side cover on when we noticed alot of slop on the input shaft.

yeah. the front bearing is shot.

SOOOO. needless to say, I'm waiting on yet ANOTHER part. it should be here by wednesday. But. That means I have to go that long without the truck.

Oh well. aside from that, everything seems to be going fairly well. Lets hope that this is it...and it lasts for a little while.

Mmmk. gonna go back out and sand the flywheel, get the clutch and pressure plate back on, and prolly throw the bellhousing back on. It'll give me something to do for now.

-Sam.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

well.

let's hope the man in the brown truck gets here soon.

cause i'm itching to get back on the road...i predict it'll take me a matter of a 2 hours after i get the bearing in the tranny, to get it slapped in and everything...but. then again. thats just hoping.

i'll keep you all posted. she's hitting the road again asap, dammit.

-Sam.

EDIT:

Well. the guy showed up at around 4:30. My dad got home, and we got the tranny slapped back together, then after some cursing, etc, we got the tranny stabbed in. After that, it was time to bolt up all the accessories. hah. got the starter and dust pan on, and am just figuring out the kinks in the shift plates and linkage. So, tomorrow, I'll finish that up, and get the driveshaft back in...hook up the speedo...fill with oil, and go.

Yup. Tomorrow...we hit the road again. and I am SO damn stoked.

IT LLLLIIIVVVESSSS!!

This is after I backed it out, and took it down the road. Didn't even bother cleaning the bird sh!t off it first...I was just stoked to have 'er back!

the hardest part was getting the shift linkage back into order...but. once I realized what I did wrong...it went fairly simple. Gotta adjust a little bit more to my liking, but for the most part...I'm simply thrilled. And it even has half a tank of gas! w00t!

Well, no real progress for over a month. Aside from checking fluids and putting gas in the ol' girl, there's been no problems since the tranny. haha.

And, thats really about it. been driving the tires off of 'er. 100 mile road trips without a glitch. She just keeps tickin' along. Quite a few compliments, just because it's an old truck, and "I had one like that...". Pretty cool, if you ask me. Even better when they realize I'm a young guy. Haha.

And, still getting a consistent 16+ mpg's. that includes some intown driving, idling, and a few burnouts and other nonsense of throttle mashing. So, I can't complain at all. haha.

and..thats really about it. Maybe i'll throw some pics up of the ol' girl. But..aside from that. just drivin' my love and lovin' drivin'.

I have 3 running 307's. I need to stick one in something I'm driving. What gears does your truck have?
