Starter wiring

I happen to look down last night and see a single yellow wire hanging by my starter. It looks like it bolts to the starter solenoid. Does anyone know what this is for and where it goes? Truck still starts

Re: Starter wiring

Are you running an HEI? Have you tested it for power when the key is on? What kind of terminal does it have, a ring or push-on clip?

Also a quick photo will help tremendously.

Re: Starter wiring

I am not home right now but it is factory wiring truck was un-touched from 1988 until last fall and before that my dad tore it apart it was my grandfathers truck.
I am running HEI but we just put that on last fall. and we just used the same wire off the original distributor (which was yellow) for power since it had 12volts with the key on and now that you say that the truck is running bad I thought it was due to a plugged fuel filter that I just changed and was just about to clean carb. I think it has a ring on it that wire which broke but it is still on the statrer but not 100% sure.

Re: Starter wiring

Here's a few photos that might help.. this is on a 1970 with points ignition

(I realize you aren't asking about the power cable but I should mention the positive cable to starter connection seen in the attached 2191 and 2193 photos is not stock of course - that part is a DIY from a pc of copper plumbing pipe, heat-shrink, and a sparkplug cable boot - the cable as it came from LMC is what you see in the photo 2164 and it didn't seem to fit right)..

Hope that helps

Re: Starter wiring

This wire is for a bypass to send full voltage to the coil when starting. It is not used with HEI. But, you should not run HEI off the original wire to the coil. It goes through a resister & is not heavy enough gauge for it. I like to tie into the pink wire on the ign switch with a 12 gauge wire right to the power term. on the HEI unit.
