Media blasting...

So I have my truck torn down (for the most part) and am debating on media blasting the front clip and the bed... the cab i was just going to use Jasco... what are some good prices for media blasting? Ive sent out some emails to places and made a few call but am debating on just using Jasco on the whole thing...


FYI Jasco is an aircraft stripper that forms up like a gel.. essentially melts the paint off...

I got a quote for $600 to do my bed South of Chicago. A little high I thought.

well. i know a shop has overhead and whatnot. but i did my frame using about 300lbs of media. which costs about 8-10 bucks a bag.(3bags) and it took me about 45-60 min but i doubt it would take that long on a bed and fenders since a frame has lots of nooks and crannys and a bed and fenders are pretty flat. this was at my friends shop who has a big industrial blaster. but that gives u a sense of what it costs them. i think 600 is pretty high.

one thing to consider is that it can take significantly longer, and be more labor intensive to blast sheetmetal, than thicker parts like a frame. the heat created by the media, will warp the metal, which means you have to go slow, and take breaks, just like when welding.

I talked with our local soda blaster and he said his rate is $210/hr. To gauge that, he said to blast the interior of my truck would take about an hour. Not a bad price to pay for the end result and reduction in hassle.

If someone is good with a blaster it is definitely the way to go IMHO. Some guys are good enough to not warp anything and you have beautiful bare metal that is perfectly clean. I have had bad luck with chemical paint strippers as they can get in seams and cause you all kinds of headache later on. Bad thing about soda is that you have to neutralize it or it can give you big problems later too. There are other types of media that are better. Last time I got a cab done it cost me around 175 dollars and they used coal slag.

I would never blast the long straight (supposedly flat) panels. That's just me. Someone really has to know what they are doing to blast those and not oil can the crap out of the panel.

Front Clip and Bed , to me, would be the easiest to take the DA or stripping disc to.

Got a cost back from a local shop here in Modesto for about $200-$400 depending on time. Sounds good to me. I'm still debating on jasco and or using a grinder with a feathering wheel. :/

I blasted my cab, fenders, doors, and core support myself, using the finest "black diamond" media from Tractor Supply. I've heard too many "warping" horror stories to attempt the flat hood, though. I used a 3M paint stripping disk for the sheetmetal part of the hood, and only blasted the supports on the underside.

I had the entire body on my 69 (MINUS BED FLOOR) done for $1200.
