Re: sm465 linkage help

Converting to a hydraulic clutch is certainly a easy way to solve the issue with a big block conversion.

Pull the engine forward to the 2wd position and use the 2wd linkage. Only way I know to make it work correctly.

Re: sm465 linkage help

There is no pulling the engine forward because the 4x4 uses a different crossmember.

Either get rid of the headers and get a set of Heddmans which will clear the factory linkage or get a set of 2 1/2" manifolds.

I had some Doug Thorley chrome tr-y's I want to run years ago but had some issue. Bought a cheap set of headers and they didn't work. Ran the Heddmans and OEM linkage for 12 years or so. Then I went to the 'vette manifolds and that is what I would recommend anyone else do as well.

Re: sm465 linkage help

Um, yes you can pull the engine forward. Unbolt it and move it forward, redrill. And yes there may be a clearance issue with the oil pan on the 454 that may need to be addressed. Just moved an engine forward on a customers 72 to put a T400 in and a doubler. My customer retained the 350, so I just used a 2wd fan shroud. Just recently helped my son-in-law install a 454 in his 68 3/4 ton. We converted to 4x and 454. Used the 2wd bolt holes and I had a set of big block stands. He bent a piece of 3/8'' flat plate steel to connect the lower part of the stands as a x-member

Re: sm465 linkage help

I can’t believe I read that first thread and didn’t see it was a 454.

I know you can do all of that to move the motor forward, but usually a question such as that precludes the poster from such work because they asked a simple question.

Obviously my mistake as the big block swap doesn’t allow for an easy bolt in swap. Mea culpa.

Re: sm465 linkage help

Without photos, I don't know on your big block, but when I put a small block in my truck, I cut off the bottom lever of the z-bar and welded it back a couple of inches over to clear the headers. But careful not to go to far or it will pop off when you press it in.

Just an idea.

Re: sm465 linkage help

CharlieBrown,

I have a SBC 400 CI with a SM420, I did what Dave12 also had done, I put on set of long tube headers and had to move the lower clutch rod over to the end of the Z Bar, I also shortened and threaded the lower rod and used a rod end for the connection... it works real nice!

Re: sm465 linkage help

These guys might know about hydraulic options since they do a lot of SM465 swaps.
