Disc brake conversion

OK so I have a 1970 C 10 four will drum power brakes. I was looking to go out to the wrecking yard I’ll pull something apart and convert mine to front desk. I was looking to go out to the wrecking yard And pull something apart and convert mine to front disk. My question is what tipes and years can I just strip off the spindles backing plate rotors brake lines and calipers that would be a direct bolt on to my truck oh and by the way my truck is at half tone.

Re: Disc brake conversion

First off it's gotta be a half ton and you'll need everything that also connects the two sides (steering links and so on), everything BUT the crossmember.

It might be possible to get away with less, but I used all of that!

Re: Disc brake conversion

Might as well get the rear axles while your at it. You'll have 5 lug in front 6 in back if you don't.

Re: Disc brake conversion

Depending on what the wrecking yard will charge you for all that stuff in post 2 and 3 (which is good advice), you may just want to consider a 6 lug front disk conversion kit from places like POL or CPP (well, maybe not them...) or one of the many other mfgrs.

71-72 are your primary target junkyard vehicles with factory front disks. But as dbm highlighted, they are 5 lug. Also keep in mind that if you have stock steel pre-71 wheels, they will not clear the caliper on factory front disk brakes. So keep that in mind, including your spare tire plan...

Can't use the 5 lug 71-72 axles in the 1970 and ealier housings. The axles are too long.

Moser makes a 5 lug conversion axle that is the correct length for 1970 and earlier housings. I used a set on my 1969 C10 12-bolt, and I also have 1972 GMC C15 5 lug disc brake stuff up front.

I'm the same boat as you.

I got the entire front (5lug discs) and rear axle from the next generation truck. Seems I will have to modify the rear axle to mount to the trailing arms - which I want to keep. I understand the trailing arms offer a better ride.

I noticed that the Disc conversion kit from LMC also requires 17" wheels to clear the calipers.

I'm confused now.

According to the LMC web site, chrome steel wheels are 15"(#38-3611). Why is it then that 16" wheels wont fit?

I've got the front axle off a 73 onwards chassis waiting to be installed on my truck. I've also got 16" wheels being widened to 9J to be able to fit 265/75/16 tyres, so your comment worries me.

Re: Disc brake conversion

OR....

Is there a difference between pre71 and post 71steel wheels? I recon my wheels are 73 onwards.

So if I get the six lug disk conversion my 6 lug truck raley rims won't even fit ove the disk brakes?

Re: Disc brake conversion

I’ve heard some people grind the tie rod down a little. Mine had the wheel weights in the inside of the rim which came right off, but still hit the wheel itself. I personally wouldn’t grind on the tie rod
