3400 rpms on a GMC 228 sound right ?

On the web site old GMC trucks I've found my truck should have 3400 rpm with the original 228 in it . Does this sound right ? next thing is I want to hook up a tach but dont know what to get since I've got the original wiring 6 volt positive ground system. Any help would be great !! thanks
