1954 Chevy Truck windshield height

Can anyone tell me what the height of the 54 windshield is supposed to be? The opening in my cab is 15 1/2" top to bottom and the windshield I recieved is 15 5/8" high. I tried to install last weekend and it is bulging out at the top and the only thing I can guess is the windshield was made to big.

Thanks

Re: 1954 Chevy Truck windshield height

I have a '54 but I can't tell an 1/8" difference with it in the truck. I did replace the rubber around the windshield though, and it was a really tight fit. I had to have the neighbor pull on the rubber on the inside of the truck as I pushed on the top outside. I used a lot of rubber lube and kept at it. It finally went in but I was afraid I was going to break the windshield or rip the seal. Like you I thought it wouldn't fit, but I took it out of that truck and I didn't change anything but paint it replace the rubber. It did bulge out at the top until it seated. Maybe a glass guy will chime in.

Keep in mind the window does not sit inside the opening, it sits in front of it. The seal is what overlaps the opening.

You might lookup the rope technique for installing windows. You essentiall stuff a rope in the seal lip, line it up to the opening and while holding a firm pressure of the window/seal to the opening pull the rope slowly from the inside which draws the lip of the seal over the opening.

This is on an FJ40, but same principle

Re: 1954 Chevy Truck windshield height

I've talked to a few professionals and also had a guy that called his manufacture and they all told me that the windshield is 15 1/2" high. I did have a professional that's been doing it for 20 years help me put the windshield in and he did use the rope he did say there's something wrong because he's never had this kind of problem before so he's going to shave it a 1/8" and hopefully that will do the trick

Must have been the last one made on Friday afternoon.

At least it looks like your glass guy has it figured out and is fixing it.
