How many '60 and '61 "Ugly Snout" trucks survive?

I have noted that there are not a lot of these '60-'61 early trucks on here, or at least the photos are few and far between compared to the later "flat hood" trucks.

I have seen a few '60 and '61 trucks with later hoods on as well, no idea if it is a n issue with shame or preference.

So I was wondering how many of these very early trucks survive, either as resto/rodded or stashed away examples.

Also, I believe one can fit and interchange hoods on these trucks..... is that as easy as bolt on/bolt off and plug and play, or do you need to get different hinges, latches etc ?

Then my next question is, How often, and for how much could one see an "ugly snout" early hood for sale ?

If you have pics of your own very early '60's truck with early hood/bonnet, please do post up as well, as I am creating myself a file of photos of these trucks, seeing as we still want one of them.

Thanks for your comments and contributions as always.

I wrecked my truck...really sucks!!!
...but it's giving me a chance to do something different. I've always liked the 60-61 Chevy Apache.

Re: How many '60 and '61 "Ugly Snout" trucks survive?

I had a 1961 LWB custom cab for 12 years before I sold it. The "ugly snout" was the best part of the trucks looks to me.

They are getting hard to find, I looked high and low for another 1961 but ended up with my "new" 1966 instead.

Re: How many '60 and '61 "Ugly Snout" trucks survive?

I've been into this series of trucks for a LONG time and I have always loved the 60-61 Chevrolet hoods...

Unless you're in a favorable climate there's a lot to be said for finding a nice one that doesn't require financing.

I have a 61 C10 hood "rough" at the braces and a "perfect" 60 lcf hood that I hope to marry up soon. Not mine pictured but inspiring none the less...

I'll be running that on my 62 C10 if I don't mess it up trying... otherwise I have a decent 2-6 Chevy hood as a back-up so to speak.

The 60-61 GMC's are not my style but they do make a statement!

What is the difference in the park lamp bezels? I have a set, but they are different from yours. Mine are more plain... rather get some like yours.

Those pictured are chrome 1960 Chevrolet bezels.

The green truck has painted 61 bezels.

I prefer the 60 style painted or either set when chromed.

I don’t have an early hood on my 1960 but here are a bunch of pics I’ve collected:

Re: How many '60 and '61 "Ugly Snout" trucks survive?

Although they are now rare and desirable to restorers, I was a 12 year old car kid when the 1960’s were brand new and I thought the Chevy was cool looking and the GMC hood was hideous.

After Chevrolet spent millions designing the entire 1960 truck line with a space-age theme, it seemed that GMC was given a $50 budget and told to make it look different, so they made it as ugly as possible out of spite. After all the investment spent on Chevrolet styling, I was amazed the early GMC hood ever gained design committee approval and actually made it into production.

All these years later I’ve come to appreciate the uniqueness of the 1960-61 GMC hood, especially because so few have survived. Back in the 60’s – 70’s every person I knew with one of those hoods threw it away right after buying the truck and swapped to a 62-66 Chevy or GMC version instead.

From what limited production numbers I can find, it appears about 3 million 60-66 Chevy trucks and 744,000 GMC’s were produced during the same period. Of this total only 179K of these were 60-61 GMC’s (less than 5%). Considering how many were scrapped early in life, plus age and attrition I’d speculate they are nearly extinct now. Finding an excellent example of either a 60-61 Chevy or GMC hood at a reasonable price is very difficult today.

Re: How many '60 and '61 "Ugly Snout" trucks survive?

By the way, any 60-66 Chevy or GMC pickup, suburban, or full size large truck hood will bolt on to any other 60-66 model. You just have to use the latch mechanism designed for the hood you're using. The 60-61 latch release hangs straight down. The 62-66 release points towards the drivers side. Some installations require a longer or shorter latch pin on the lower striker plate, while others do not.

Ok, well then yes. I have the 61 bezels and I agree I prefer the 60 style chromed. I will be ordering some real soon. Thanks for that information.

Technically, my Suburban is a '62, but I put the '60-'61 hood on it, with '60 turn signals and '61 grill. The instrument cluster is the full-gauge style, and the kick panel vents are '60/'61 with the cable levers.
It's just easier to tell everyone it's a '61.

My hood bolted right on, with no additional work required with the latch.

My son dislikes it, my wife wasn't really a fan... But there's something so "last age" with the design, I just had to have it... and on a Suburban, it totally changes the looks.

Dual spot lights, factory grill guard and a winch would make it perfect!

Re: How many '60 and '61 "Ugly Snout" trucks survive?

Finding a premium condition 60-61 hood is nearly impossible. Just finding the freakin hood is hard enough anymore.

I have a 64 short step that I just put a 61 Chevy hood on, it bolted right up but I have an issue with getting it to sit flush with the cowl on the back side. Trying to work that out.

Took it to a body shop and had the hood seams all welded so you no longer see them. Was supposed to be finished in 3 weeks and that was nearly 9 weeks ago, still waiting.

You see the flat hoods everywhere and rarely ever see the 60-61.

When I am finished with my '64, I hope for it to look like this.

When you execute that, you will be a legend.

Look forward to it.

Re: How many '60 and '61 "Ugly Snout" trucks survive?

I bought the V8 hood emblem off a Viking coming home from Joplin, Mo. a couple years before I found a hood. I'd love to get a Jet Age hood ornament from the GMC to put on it.
