Thumbs up Re: 65 Burb body mounts

Alrighty, to put a cap on my original post - I bought the 30-0131 from the LMC site (http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=37). Finally received them on Monday and just got them installed today. Everything went swimmingly with two exceptions - there are two bolts that are 3-4 inches too long and a set of bolts that are an inch too short. I went ahead and installed the ones that were too long, not a big deal and I can cut them later. I'll have to hit the hardware store to pick up two more for the ones that were too short.

Some pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/71281546@N08/

Now I just need to find someone to do the body work and I'm ready to reassemble. I also need to find the engineer who thought up the location for the front most fender bolt and beat him. I'll unfortunately have to do the same to the guy who cut the dash for a dual din head unit.

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

how come that you used the shims on some and not others.in the 60-66 I believe that the 4 rear on each side are all the same height. for your frt cab mount did you use the 67-72 mount ?. can you give the thickness(height) of the rear insulators without shims= the top one only please
thks

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

I used a high density/ozone/oil/heat/UV resistant rubber from McMaster-Carr & re-used the OE metal plates. Cheap fix.

Four bolts came with shims - the big ones for the front of the cab and the two really long bolts. I wasnt quite sure where those went so I stuck them as the third back. Not sure if the shims need to be there or not. None of the mounts looked like they needed shims at all. I figured the middle would need the most support. If someone knows please correct me so I can put them where they need to be

For the front cab mounts I used the ones that came with the package but yes, they were pretty much the same as the 67-72 mounts (I had a set of those for a different project). I'll try and get out there tonight or tomorrow to get the thinkness of the insulators but I'm fairly certain they were the same as the old ones were supposed to be. Somewhat hard to tell as mine were so badly damaged.

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

Now that I look at the picture on the LMC site, the shims were supposed to go right after the front cab mounts. I'll probably move them there though I'm still unsure if they're even needed.

I did some follow up on these insulators and the 3946246 is still a good # from gm. it is stocked in Lansing, mich. it is on the discontinued list though. list at about 25.00 each. they were last listed as the #3 upper body insulator on a 73-91 blazer/jimmy. classic industries has them for 13.00 each and look under 69-72 suburban
ron
they work on the 64-66 suburbans
Follow-up on the rectangular mounts: P/N: 3946246. verifying that these are the rectangular ones? If so, GM parts direct has them for ~$8 each

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

The dimensions on these: 3946246 rectangular mounts: http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results...number=3946246

are:

3" long
2.1" wide
3/4" thick

What I currently have on my 65 Burb are 3" long x 1 3/4" wide. Steel spacers are 1 3/4" as well.

I thought these 3946246 were what I needed . . . I believe I can use them, looks like there's room in there between the channel.

Anybody got the dimensions for these from Classic Industries? Wondering if they are 1 3/4" wide vs 2":

From previous: "This is what I discovered: 1964-6 body mounts are p/n 3794779, w/dimentions of 1.76" w; 3.00" l; 0.92" thick, needing 8 (up & lwr same). The 67-8 p/n is 3909351 up & lwr, 69-72 uses 3909351 as the lwr, but p/n 3946246 is the upr. No dimentions are given for these cushions, and it seems that the frame changed in '69."

Not clear what the GM P/N is for those cushions sold by Classic Industries...

here is what I orginally posted
the following is what Lewis Matkin sent to me. the pictures are mine and
I will have some more later for you as I have to check something out

Ron, this is Lewis. Please forgive me for not getting back sooner, but I
have been busy in my work for the church I serve. I checked both my
65-66 parts manual and my 67-72 parts manual. This is what I discovered:
1964-6 body mounts are p/n 3794779, w/dimentions of 1.76" w; 3.00" l;
0.92" thick, needing 8 (up & lwr same). The 67-8 p/n is 3909351 up &
lwr, 69-72 uses 3909351 as the lwr, but p/n 3946246 is the upr. No
dimentions are given for these cushions, and it seems that the frame
changed in '69. Qty's in 67-8 are 16, with 69-72 requiring 10 of each.
If you have dimentional axcess to the later cushions, these 64-66
dimentions should help you. Like you, I suspect that the 67-8 cushions
will work, but there is no superseded p/n's between the body styles. I
can tell you that years ago I bought cab mounts for my 65 and the p/n's
had superseded to the mounts for the 67-72 cabs. I hope that this info
is of some assistance in answerring this question.

the dimensions sound right. the .92" high includes the raised section
around the bolt hole.
The measurement excl the raised section is between about .73-.74" high
hope that helps
ron
if you have trouble reading this or understanding it ask
that raised section adds about .200 " to the height

no one ever reads the whole thing do they

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

Talked to Classic Industries, their PN # G2423: http://www.classicindustries.com/truck/parts/g2423.html
measures 3" x 2.1" so it looks like they are the same as GM p/n 3946246: http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results...number=3946246

I'm wondering if mine are the original mounts, measuring 1 3/4"

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

Ron or Lewis

Mine 1s a 1966 GMC Burb

Help me understand how the parts pages work.
In the page here it shows part #3838523 next to the second item down. Then the next 4 lines are blank. Does that mean the the 3838523 part is good for each of those lines?

The 63-66 Ser. 10 (exc. 4/WD) would take part 3838523 in positions 2,3,4,5 if that is correct. The 30 would have positions 6 & 7 because of the longer body.

I've not counted mine, but I've heard from 8-16 mounts quoted as required. Not counting position 1 (which is the same as a PU) are there 4 more down each side?? Also, I don't see an upper and lower on mine. Just a single sqwashed mount. Mine look round when looking under the vehicle and I'm 100% sure, nothing has ever been fixed or replaced on mine. Ha ha

I'm sure it is moot, because there appears to be only the #3946246 out there.

ROYL
If those work, let us know.

Thanks guys.

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

there are 8 body mount positions. 1 insulator mounts top of the frame and the other on the lower side. those rubber tabs unite inside of the frame hole. the part nbrs superseeded. doesn't mean that they are the same but can be used, one can always trim them down if you desire 1 3/4" instead of 2". someone did say the hole was larger in the new one. you can always bush them. these insulators were used up into about 2002 blazers I believe,
Lewis is an old gm partsman whose dad had a GMC dealership in the day. he has all of the old parts books for these truck. he shows up from time to time on Jollies old GMC site. he is the one that gave me the parts nbrs. wonderful old gentleman.
I have seen kits for the 69-72 suburban that the insulators were round instead of rectangular and I think that they are available from some of these reproduction retailers
here is the original quote again. the flat part of it is under 3/4", not by much and the raised portion is about another 0.050" or so.

Ithink that they wouldn't be to hard to make .the bonding of the rubber to the steel so that it stays together is the question. if on has access to a milling machine they could thickness them properly put the lip on and in business. i do have a hunk of rubber which appears to be the appropriate denseness and hardness for it. my brother got it about 25 years ago. he has been dead for 20 so I cannot ask him about it. it did come from C.P.Anderson Rubber, but the dips--t that I talked to there was no help in trying to get more from them, and of course when it is a small order; don't bother me. in other words it wasn't worth his time to check it out. they did about 10 years ago have a branch here in Victoria but it was closed down , now we know why. they didn't like dealing with individuals even if you were a business

GVDobler, Can't help on the service manual, confused as well. Like you said, at this point, ya can't get the right one anyway.

Thx Ron. You mentioned these wouldn't be hard to make, guess the market (potential sales) for 60-66 panel/burbs isn't enough? This post mentioned someone was going reproduce the correct 60-66 rectangular insulator/cushions, this was in 2009, but apparently didn't happen ... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...1&postcount=23

Here are some pics comparing the originals and the ones I bought (3946246), showing the difference in the hole diameters:

=========================
The pictures you have Ron, of yours earlier in this thread, the steel bonded to one side looks to be the same size as the rubber, but these the steel is an 1/8" wider, which won't allow it to fit inside the channel in a couple locations. Would need to grind off the excess, which dthela acknowledged he did.

And as described earlier in this thread by dthela and carryallnuts, one needs account for the 1/4' larger diameter hole, with spacer material and/or enlarging the hole in your frame.
==========================

here's pics of my 65 Burb mounts, they aren't too squashed...

Contacted GMC Pauls to follow-up, here's an update on any potential to get somebody to make the correct cushions for 60-66 Burbs/panels. Sounds like a good company who's in touch with the need, and said they have asked the company again to re-evaluate demand for these.

So your point is reproduction cushions would not be limited to the rectangular ones: 3794779, but would include the square looking ones, shown above?

Re: 65 Burb body mounts

I'm trying to get some current info on body mounts for my '66 Chevy Suburban.
It seems the GM Parts Direct ones, p/n 3946246 are discontinued and no longer available and those were the ones Classic Industries were selling as p/n G2423 and no longer available.
So, what has someone here successfully used for there Suburban??
