In response to the earlier questions asking about late model heater motor options, I swapped my original for one out of a Pontiac Fiero. The main thing I was looking for was one that rotated in the correct direction. At the time it seemed the only models I could find were those in S10 pickups and the Fiero. The advantage of the Fiero over the S10 is that they are all mounted in the trunk, so they are clean and look like new compared to one that’s been mounted under the hood for a couple of decades.

The heater case required some minor trimming, but the much larger plastic fan fit into the case without modification. The motor itself is the newer permanent magnet design. On high speed airflow is about twice that of the original fan and motor. The rubber hose is presumably for motor ventilation. It doesn't go anywhere in my installation, so I just pointed it downward to keep dust out.

i have a unit I'm going thru right now. When restoring a deluxe heater, what color and finish did they come from factory?

Good to know, I have a cheap heater in my 62. Good luck finding a Fiero around here! I havn't seen any of them in the several junkyards I frequint in years. What is a deluxe heater worth if I were to get one in a yard? $10?

i know this thread is about heaters but the air motor has more windings and slightly faster speed which blows more air.

deluxe heater motor on left... factory air motor on right.
got a new air motor over the counter at napa. seems like a decent swap out.

of course, i could be wrong.

Sense Clemdaddy posted the pics of the fan motors, I will piggy back with Van Pershing`s fan /hub quick fix which is one thing I did...after the fan started screaming at me last year.

When Bubba327 changed out his heater core for the larger core he had to open up his upper lid the accomidate the larger core, as shown in the pic above....my upper section is already larger/factory but has a notch in it for a block off plate, I`m assumming that this would be a later design as to cut costs one box fits all...? I ended up with a smaller core only because I could`nt find a larger core locally, made a quick plate from alumimun. Anybody have pics as to how the factory hung the core in the box.....?

There are formed steel 'C' shaped straps at each end that fit over the tanks on the ends. These are attached to the top cover with screws. Sorry I don't have any pics........

I just rebuilt the deluxe unit in my 63 w/the Ranco heater valve installed on the core if anybody needs any literature on it or the install.

That deluxe heater captainfab has is a little different than mine. My heater control valve is on the top of the unit. The cable is not exposed....runs through the firewall into the heater box assembly

The '60-'63 deluxe heaters are different than the '64-'66 deluxe heaters. The cable you speak of does indeed go to a heater coolant flow control valve located on the heater core itself. The cable in the pics that Jon posted above, controls a flap that regulates the amount of air entering the heater box from the cowl area.

quick question i have a 66 with a deluxe heater and am wanting to put a economy heater in it for the space under the hood. can i hook my old deluxe controls up some how or will have to also get the eco controls?

In one of the earlier post it was stated that 60-63 did not offer a deluxe heater set up, But according to the options catalog I have they did. This is the 1960 edition page.

I can't confirm on a 66, but I installed a deluxe heater in my 1960 first, and replaced it later with an economy model. The factory operating controls were identical, except the deluxe model used four levers, while the economy model only used two of them. In fact the economy panel only came with two levers, but the 4 lever deluxe panel could perform the same functions. Two of the 4 deluxe levers just wouldn't be connected to anything.

You know Jake that first picture is just weird. I've seen it before but never took the time to analyze it. I can't envision any way that could be installed as shown. The long upper intake would obviously have to be connected under the hood to the plenum intake on the upper firewall, but the defroster ducting would have to be inside the cab. And of all the heaters I've seen, the economy models are the only ones to have the fan motor inside the cab. The deluxe models are under the heater core on the engine compartment side of the firewall as shown.

It appears what they did was rotate the fan housing outlet to the side so it could connect directly to the defroster valve, and left out the elbow duct that actually connects the two parts inside the truck. It was probably just slapped together to have a picture for an advertising brochure, figuring nobody would know what it's suppose to look like anyway. But it sure is confusing from a historical documentation standpoint.

Was that maybe the design used for the cab-over...or LCF...?

nah what it is,they turn the under hood part (drawing) so the buy could see what goes under the hood. That's all.

The reason the picture is weird is because it's for a tilt cab, take a look at Areotrucks post #32 I looked at the flyer and wondered the same thing then I read it was for a tilt cab....Vernski

You might be able to rotate that blower motor..as they should be clocked for different apps....and use it for the standard pick-up cab....and use the defroster plenum where it should go. Meaning....maybe....that that tilt-cab NOS heater would give you a new set-up for your truck....possibly minus a piece or two. Nothin to complicated..

I was told using a blower motor out of a suburban that has rear air and heat vents in an earlier truck, like my 63' will give you a ton of force through the shorter ductwork...the motors should be interchangeable.

so where does the cable go on the economy heater? do you have to take the cover off?mines been just sticking out the firewall since i got it.
