Shortening my E brake

To finish my E brake set up I need to shorten my front cable.

1950 frame. 1984 c10 2wd axle, drums. Also used the c10 E brake under the dash too. There's a bracket I need to take off donor frame to hold rear cables but that's easy enough.

Pictures show the type of adjuster it has. Since the front cable was too long I originally just cut it behind the cable end. A closer picture of where ends come together shows how I need to copy it.

And I bought a rear brake line that was to short. The rubber one from axle to frame. How do you go about getting the proper length? I figured people who swap axles or lift their trucks have to do this alot.

Re: Shortening my E brake

Well sailboat rigging shops are probably few and far between in Odessa so going to one and having the cut the cable and swag a new stop on it is out.

Ask https://www.basinwirerope.com/ They are in Odessa and if they don't deal with cable that small they probably know who in the area does. Measure what length you need and mark it well but don't cut it. Here a local to the area bearing belt, cable and just about anything industrial supply house does it.

Re: Shortening my E brake

I'll call them tomorrow! Is there a rule of thumb when measuring?

I'd have the adjustment screwed out which I think you have and then mark it where the cable will end up being snug but give you just enough room to put it together. I did one a tad too short once and that was a bit of a challenge to get together.

Re: Shortening my E brake

Just thinking, an aircraft shop that deals with small planes should have the capability to do it too. They do sell the stops but all I am finding is packages of 25 or 50 or more.

Re: Shortening my E brake

And I can get it to fit in the same coupler thing too?

You should be able to, take the coupler along to measure with.

Re: Shortening my E brake

I see these are easy to get. I'll just hope that place or somewhere else can fit a fertile into it.

Re: Shortening my E brake

I got everything routed forbthe E brake this morning. I took a bracket off the donor frame and clamped it on. And I copied how the cable went through another bracket on the donor and did the same on one of my brackets.

I taped the overlapping pieces together and I have the adjuster adjusted way out.

Control cables in Santa Fe Springs, California can make anything you need. I had them copy an E brake cable for my sons Camaro that was not available anywhere. They made it up in a couple days and very reasonable.

Re: Shortening my E brake

Yea I looked up all sorts of places else where and found a lot of diy stuff but I guess I wasn't using the right search words to find a non automotive place to do it locally. Mr48chev helped with that, his link went to a local wire rope place. I type in wire rope and I find all sorts if stuff.

Ok, so with parking brake pedal reset and everything lined up... I want to hook this up with no slack? Slight tension when I'm done? I'm just double checking here, I'd hate to cut too short.

That leaves me with the rear rubber brake line. How do I measure for this? Let suspension hang?

Re: Shortening my E brake

Quick question. Copying the donor routing worked perfectly, it enabled me to drill hold in body mount to clip cable just like the donor did. On the donor the cable passed under the frame through a guide, and more or less stayed under the frame all the way back.

I passed the cable under the frame too. It would rub that way. I have seen guides on other vehicles. And Google image search shows some people drill a hole and pass through the frame.

What is the best thing I should do?

Re: Shortening my E brake

Pipe idea sounds good. I was worried if I just did a hole if there would be a problem rubbing wire. Here's mine still loose and not cut yet. Goes under frame, donor had a ring where it went under. I guess that is basically the same as passing through a hole. Not sure if it matters, but through frame would be a little straighter of a run.
