Installing a 700r4 behind a 292

Well now that I have a few miles on my rebuilt 292 and installing a tech I'm not liking the 3200 rpms while cruising at 65 that I'm seeing with the stock th350 in my 77 P10 StepVan
Picked up a 700r4 over the weekend and have been reading everything I can about wiring / TV cable adjustment so I've got my head wrapped around it pretty good now .
I'm running the stock 1bbl and will be keeping it and want to do as simple install as everything is all stock just looking to drop the rpms at cruising speed and get a little better gear selection as it's a gear hunting dog on just minimum hills since I'm driving a literal "box"
Looking at the lockup kits offered it seems like it's really a bunch of un needed stuff sold in the kits since it seems the stock 700r4 has most of the stuff just need to wire it up right .
I'm looking at using a cruise control brake switch and when I pull the pan off see what I need to wire the switched 12+ to and if I need to run a ground out of the 4 pin .
The TV cable will be most likely be a adjustable style for easier set up .

Now the question is should I use a vacuum switch also ? Right off the bat or if I need it I can add it later .

I'm going to post pictures as I go and ask for pointers if I run into issues and figured having a thread with the install will keep it neater and easy to follow .

1st-3rd gears on the 7004R are the same as the Th350, so you aren't helping the selection at all. If the th350 kicked down into 2nd to make it up a hill, the 700r4 will as well. Sounds like it will be hunting out of overdrive/4th gear alot as well which will cause heat and kill the trans pretty quick.

I don't know about the 700r4 but I've put a 200-4R in my old 79. It installed like any other trans. I used a TCI bracket if I remember right for the TV cable and used a bowtie overdrives wiring harness for the torque convertor lockup.

I have done several behind 235's with adapters ( buffalo) and behind 250's. The TV cable adjustment is very important and you are on the right path with adjustable. Contact Bowtieoverdrives and they may have something figured out for the 1bbl carb/throttle lever. I have always used 2bbl's and 4bbls on Clifford intakes. TCI has the easiest and cheapest "kit" for 4th gear lock up and it uses a vacuum switch. I have also run a mid 80's gm vac switch for the later TH350's that had lock up in 3rd. I use just a vac switch as the vacuum in the engine changes when you step on the brakes anyway so I felt a brake switch wasn't needed. All have worked well. You can also hard wire the 4th gear lock up internally yourself so it is powered up when the 4th solenoid responds when the trans shifts into 4th. Adding a switched 12v power wire at the connector will also allow you to manually lock it up in 3rd or 4th (3rd if you tow). Snoop around on the interwebs, there are a few schematics out there showing how it's done.

Hoping to start this weekend clean it up and getting it on a stand so I pull the pan . I want to see what I'm working with and take some pictures to post .
Then order the parts I'm going to need for the speedo cable ,filter and tv cable and some gaskets to freshen it up before install .

'93 B-body (Caprice, Roadmaster etc.), Last year for the 700R4/4L60, Decent cores for building.

Pull the pan like it is on the stand, Do Not turn it over & let crap from the pan drain into the trans.

Good working 700R4's run "Run clean", The magnet will be a little "haired over" with metal but that's it, If there is more than just a whiff of clutch material in the pan......The 3-4 clutches most likely need attention.

Sweet , looks like I didn't end up with a turd ( won't know till I pull the pan , I was told it came out of a trans am but it was also a replacement trans in it and looking at the paint pen markings it's a recycled part . The only thing that thru me was the tail shaft with the mounting holes thru the side but it may have been changed as I thought that was a camaro thing

i am in on this. i have a 66 burb with st ock 292-6 and a 4 spd..driving around town is fine but if i need to go freeway --i don't see it.tv cable hook up is what i am interested in

im pulling my 4-speed trans out this winter and doing the conversion also , i seen a couple of different mounting options i could do for the tv cable .

Pulled the pan , the magnet had a little bit of slime on it and the bottom of the pan had a slight amount of black on it , not thick just looked like a medium tan like and wiped out with a paper towel .
Went to bowtie overdrive sand figured out my speedo gear combo and will be ordering that and a couple other things from them after calling and picking their brains about the TV cable hook up and which to use .
Next going to look at the lock up wiring , it looks like 3 wires coming out and inside is a one wire pressure switch, a 2 wire solenoid and a temp switch (got to figure out what the temp switch does )

The Temp Switch Closes at 325 degrees & Locks the TCC anytime 4th gear oil is present, This is called "HOT MODE". This operation is completely pointless as a 700R4 will burn-up at 270 degrees for any amount of time.

I found another diagram that was easy to figure out and what I'm going to do . Terminal A is getting the normal 12v+ cruise control brake switch treatment . Then tie terminal B and D together outside the trans on the pigtail. I'm going to run a wire from there up and make it a manual switched ground for the 2/3 lock up for towing if needed
I figured keeping the transmission as stock inside wise if any work needs to be done or replaced will keep it simple .
I got a call into Bowtie Overdrive for a carb TV hookup to see if they have something available with sending pictures of my stock kick down cable or to point me the right direction .

While I'm collecting parts ,there's a small item that I will need but looking for help here on the list for what shift indicator that matches this one since it's a GM P chassis so I can get new lens with the right shift pattern

Ordered the speedo gears, TV cable ,filter,brake light switch,converter wiring pigtail ,new pan with a drain plug and some replacement seals and gaskets.

Looks like I'm on my own with the Detent cable set up as I was told they don't mess with the monojet carbs and I should get a just get a new manifold with a 2 bbl .
Not a real biggie , I was planing on doing something myself but if someone else had already why reinvent the wheel .
Once that stuff comes in and if all goes right I'll be ready for install in about a week .

Hey Koffer! I just thought I would dive bomb on into your thread and say high. I live about 1/2 hour North of you up above Clinton NJ. I am also in the process of doing a 292/700r4 on my 46 pickup. I am going the 4 barrel Clifford route using Bowtie Overdrive's TV Made EZ.

Messed with it some more tonight and installed the Detent cable and checked the lockup solenoid and that failed got a click then nothing , had to remove it and give it a couple of whacks to get it to let go and was able to get I to click again but stuck again . I said screw it and ordered a new A/C delco unit with a new wiring harness and connectors for $43 from rockauto
The connectors in the pan were brittle and after messing with the sticky valve the plastic was cracked .
I'm sure when I get all done it won't move an inch as it will be a shot trans but hell it will look nice and installed correctly
