Re: Maybellene 52 gmc

top left is how i bent the rear of the plates to fit the frame.Top right you can see where I drilled holes and welded 1/4-20 nuts to the back of the left plate for the fuel, brake and wiring. Center I was jist going to make gussets and call it good but I couldnt help myself. I also cut a "fish mouth" in the back. the idea there is to not concentrate load in one spot causing a crack where the part that flexes meets one that dosen't. I don't think it dose anything right there but it looks better. I also made plates with nuts welded to the back for the running board hangers.

Re: Maybellene 52 gmc

got the computer fixed.
I was just going to buy the lower coil-over mounts but every time I went to order them somthing came up. the wife got sick then then the dog. so I figured I would just make them that way I could add a hole to the bottom and get an inch more adjustment.I drew up the basic plan and started cutting.
top right, is the handy dandy circle attachment for the plasma cutter that I made a few years back it will cut fromabout 2.5" to what ever. It works great for fan shrouds. is moreaccrate than the miller one in Classic truck mag.

Center left, I was shooting for just over 3" to fit the 3' axle tube.

Center right this is how alazy guy sets the guide to cut an outside line with a olasma cutter.I use washers centers from hole saws anything that I can for find for guides

Bottom left is a 3/8 bolt with a washer tacked to it I put it in a hole hand tight and take a steel ruler and scribe a line take out the bolt and set up the guide cutthe line then sand and put the bolt back in and cut around it and wham bam a decenn rough part!

Re: Maybellene 52 gmc

some more.
I laid out the first side and double checked and pilot drilled all the holes 1/8"then drilled to 1/4"and clamped both blanks together and used a transfer punch to mark the second part.
The bottom right is a 3/16 T1 plate laid out and drilled ready for cutting. there are 4 parts there. the double holes give suspention adjustments of 1/2".
Hey is all about choice

Re: Maybellene 52 gmc

This is how I bent the side plates that mount the bottom of the shocks. I made a tool out of 2pieces of 1 /1/2X 3/8 sbout 5" long with 10guage ends wedded so there is a 3/16 gap in the middle. The handle is just a piece of 1'round tube with a 1 1/2 X3foot cheater pipe. I made a guage by drawing the angle I wanted on a piece of scrap. Then tried bending a part. I worked pretty good so I marked the rest and came up with a better way to checkmy bends.

Re: Maybellene 52 gmc

here is what I came up with. I clamped the part to a flat piece of 1/2X6" and uded a piece of 1/2" stock for a sort of go/no go guage.
as I am lazy I waited to finish sand the parts untill I knew they would work

Re: Maybellene 52 gmc

And the top shock mount. I had A hard time fighting a intermittent breaze when i made this. it seemed like it knew when i started welding, it would blow my gas away
At first I was going to use a round tube But I Had this 3/16 wall square so I used it. I welded only in one direction and only about 1" beads to keep from warping the frame. there was one bead that I did that was close to 2" to pull a .5 degree bend outof the right side. It worked well I bet I couldnd do it again though. As it sits now I am within one tenth of a degree front to back and side to side. Just lucky i guess. ibetter start thinging about some paint pretty soon.
I almost am finished with the cab floor then I can pull the cab and finish the boxing and maybe some bracing

Thanks Larry,
I always cut the fish mouths on frame boxing and braces i have seen cracks develop if the plates are cut straight. i don't think that would happen there But it looks better.

My dad kept trying to talk me into putting the leaf springs back on
I may make some control arms from square tube later.I would like to have rod ends on top for freer movement. did you notice the factory sway bar? that is the thing that made the decision to use that set up easier. and tire clearance.
But I traded bed floor clearance for tire clearance.

Have fun working on yours!
