Mounting a gas tank under bed between frame rails ?

Anyone that has mounted the under bed between frame rail gas tanks. I took a casual look and it seemed like there might be cross member(s) in the way? This is on a 1954 1/2 ton. I was looking at the No Limit 19 gal tank sounds easy enough but are there frame cross members in the way or is it a slam dunk? This is rearward of the rear end.

We used a top fill tank from Tanks, built a frame work for the tank and removed the cross member you mentioned. And there are probably tanks that would work with the cross member in place.

I read a couple of the ads for these tanks, Brothers claims to have a tank that fits without moving the cross member. Anyone use this tank?

The difference is the tank that can be installed without removing the cross member has a step built into the top to step under the cross member. Those that move the cross member move it to the ends of the fame longitudinals and bolt it in with Grade 8 bolts.

My truck came with an El Camino tank mounted too low in the back, I raised it up and have a filler door in the fender. Still room.

Used 2 of them from brothers and 2 from docs....no issues drop them and bolt it. Easy as that.

Good to know, who is doc?
Question for you. I was taking a closer look at my truck today and the shocks are mounted behind the rear end, air bags in front of the rear. Of course there is a upper support bar added for the shocks, wondering if this might interfere with the tank. I guess I need to get the tank dimensions from the suppliers and check my measurements.

This is Doc

They will make any dimension you want to fit in the area you have.
Brothers will be cheaper but they are not custom so you need to have space.
Shocks behind the rear might be a problem with Brothers

Re: Mounting a gas tank under bed between frame rails ?

Got under the truck and measured, I have 16"x39" available for a gas tank. Looking at the Doc's measurements there's no problem mounting a tank under there without relocating any cross member. Relocating my air tank to the drivers side should be easy also as the PO installed the exhaust with a cross over and a single exit out the pass side running board area, so the drivers side between frame and drivetrain is pretty wide open. I just have to look at all the different vendors and decide best price/quality etc.

Re: Mounting a gas tank under bed between frame rails ?

Here is mine it came from POL. I got the sender to match original gauge. They are made for step sides, note the mods I had to make to the bed sill, I reinforced the other side with a piece of angle. The tank notches under the cross member and holds 19 gallons (I think, never filled it). Photo also shows how far it hangs below the bumper. Note my axle is 4wd and on 4" blocks below stock truck location. Bolts to the bottom of the frame rail.

Re: Mounting a gas tank under bed between frame rails ?

Just recently had a chance to get my tank mounted. There are more details over in the thread I have covering the build I'm doing. I used a tank from Tanks Inc. Their prices are very reasonable.
