I was wondering if someone would know what t-case would be in a 1968 Chevy K10?

68 was a transitional year, could be a rockwell or a np205 what type of transmission does it have?

Pics help greatly.

Even though this is a Ford case, the back of the NP205 looks the same for the Chevy, just stuff is dropped on the other side. Look for the little three-bolt cover between the front output rear-bearing cover and the rear output.

Your '68 should have the Rockwell 221. I don't know of any '68s with NP205s. The only '69s that I know of with NP205s are the automatic Blazers and maybe 4spds

My truck has a 4 speed manual in it. Also my transfer case doesn't look like the one Redcap has shown. The gear shiftings go like this (close to engine and back) 2high, 4high, then 4low(lowlock). Hope this helps.

Possible the dana 20?, Look for the removable oil pan on the bottom of the transfer case.

Then it isn't a NP205.

It SHOULD have a Rockwell T221, but in a 40+ year old truck...it could have had about anything swapped in.

The rockwell is a tough tcase. The one I had in my 69 came out of 67. It hadnt been touched since it left the factory and after 44 years it just now finally wore out the splines in the collar that conects the tranny to the tcase. The thing was pretty tough, I have no complaints about it. I took the covers off and all the gears inside look to be in great shape. Like I said, nothing had been done to this thing since it left the factory and it shifted into gear and ran flawlessy. I think the t221 is a pretty good tcase.

All old transfer cases like to leak. If the oil gets too low then things tend to wear out. That's usually the demise of the Rockwell 221. I figured it would be a NP205 because they started using them in '70. I have a 4spd combo out of a '70 with mfgr tag sitting in my shop.

special-K is dead on, keep an eye on your fluid level. I let mine get low due to a slow drip and it took out one of the upper bearings. They are a tough transfer case otherwise. The low height of the front driveshaft output is a nice benefit. They are a little loud but that was fine with me.

So they are a good reliable, stout transfer case if you keep the fluids up? Are they gear driven?

yes they are gear driven, that is one of the benefits of them, no sissy chain drive on the 221.

My T221 in the 1968 K20 burb is it's original, never had a failure in its lifetime.
They are tough, and they do have a gear whine which I like personally.

They still have the seals at Napa which I need to do again. The 221 (and probably all of them) have to have the correct oil level as they have a natural tendency to run a little hot. Lose a little oil and it gets hotter and they start to have problems. Most will say the 205 is tougher but I have never had a problem with mine. And yes, the straight cut gears whine.

Yes the whine is from the straight cut gears. The helical cut gears make much less noise.

Yup. Every one I have ever seen/heard had some gear whine.
