Just wondering if this is possible.

Possible, but a lot of work to get it set-up properly.

The most difficult part is locating a rack with the proper inner to inner pivot dimensions, that can be easily mounted in the proper location. If I recall correctly the inner to inner tie-rod pivots on the factory drag-link is 24". Mustang, and a few other racks can be purchased with this same inner tie rod length (The mustang being the most common, and the most affordable). The only problem is that when the rack pivots are located in their proper position (X, Y, Z coordinates) it puts the rack mounts in the u-bolts and crossmember. There's ways to do it... it just becomes involved.

I looked into doing this mod a long time ago, and ended up going another route.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: can you mount rack and pinion to stock crossmember?

Cant you just weld on a tab or something to the crossmember and attach it that way?

just poking fun......

gottwake, believe the problem is not the actual mounts, but the fact when you have the rack where it needs to be, the lower control arm u-bolts cause interference, so you will have to modify how the lower control arms attach to the cross member

Re: can you mount rack and pinion to stock crossmember?

I don't think anyone is saying it can't be done....anything is possible
cause you know, It is only metal
Not to the point of doing the rack yet, but fellow board member Scotts62 is planning a rack and pinion on his '62 with a '73-up stock cross member and custom frame......
