Re: Air Intake, what are you guys using on your swaps?

Is it better to have the MAF sensor mounted in the intake tube closer to the throttle body or closer to the filter? Assuming the filter is far away from the intake.

I noticed that the stock has the sensor mounted out by the filter box but wouldn't the true intake temps be more accurate at the throttle body? I am assuming the air is warmed a little as it enters the filter and travels to the throttle body.

Iirc the MAF sensor is supposed to be within 12” of the TB.

Within 12" meaning anywhere between that twelve inches you want or get it closer to the the TB cuz 12" is the max distance meaning closer is better?

Re: Air Intake, what are you guys using on your swaps?

Distance from the throttle body isnt a real factor, the factory air intakes on the trucks are quite a bit farther away that that. The most important thing is having good smooth air flow at the sensor. So a decent length of straight, smooth pipe before and after is best.

Not quite finished with them. Plan to build brackets from the stock upper fan shroud mounts.

Been considering this since I first completed my swap. Are you running a MAF and if so, where did you position it?

The MAF is between the TB and the Intake T.

This. most aftermarket intakes have the MAF sensor mounted right next to the air box. From what I have researched, you want the MAF placed in a straight run with about 3" of straight pipe on either side.

If you were just doing a normal swap I agree farther away from the TB is probably best. This motor has a cam, headers, exhaust, etc so it will be tuned after the truck is completed down the road. Currently this motor is running a little lean but not enough to throw a code at least not yet. I think it is from the engine upgrades.

I did think about just adding the MAF to 1 side of the Y and tuning the MAF to read 2x high.
Custom installs need/call for custom work. Sometimes easy.... sometimes not!!

Re: Air Intake, what are you guys using on your swaps?

The smaller insert type (1st picture) MAF are very sensitive to the pipe ID and Flow. The MAF with the screen(2nd picture) is a little more forgiving and since the truck engine I have came with this tube style MAF I am going to keep it if possible with minimal tuning to the MAF .

My 1970 c10 with a 2011 has the insert type in the 1st photo and it was always showing lean until I got a black insert spacer to reduce the inside of the intake tubing to the size of the stock intake. Like picture 3. since then I have had no trouble. The truck is stock except for intake and shorty header and dual exhaust.

Re: Air Intake, what are you guys using on your swaps?

The distance from the throttle body question was related to my question earlier in this thread

So thanks for that info guys. I'm running a stock 5.3l with the screen style MAF. Sounds like best scenario is to mount in middle of tube. However if I mount it out by the air filter I shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks, I finished it up this weekend. Added a support tab to help stabilize it. Going to do a little body work on it and slap some paint on.
