speedo cable firewall grommet?

this has me baffled, when i put the one in that i am replacing now, i slit it to install over the cable.
I have a new one and am refreshing the bell crank/firewall etc, so time to replace the old one that hadn't really held in place.
i dont want to slit this one and the ends of the speedo cable surely wont fit thru the hole in the grommet.
is slitting the grommet the only way to get the cable into the hole?
