Re: 1950 gmc build

I have the hood, both front fenders, the outer front grille assembly that the GMC logo attaches to, and the chrome grille. Thats it.

Re: 1950 gmc build

I did some searching tonight and found a few pics of core supports on s10 front clips. They are not super clear, but might help some. I found these on the ad engineering site.

You sorta see the mount on the lower left

I hope these help.

Re: 1950 gmc build

Thanks for sharing I have been on that site a ton and haven't seen these pics. Looks like there using angle iron. Anyone know who sells the core support for GMC'S?

Re: 1950 gmc build

hey ... do you have any better pictures of that beam mounted on the engine hoist? i have my cab off, and will need to put it back on. i scheduled the "lift off" around a college break that my son and six of his buddies were on. i'd like to try the "beam method" of putting the cab back on. thanks.

Re: 1950 gmc build

Trailrunner, I uploaded all the pictures that I have to my photobucket account. If you like send me a PM with your email address and I will email you all the measurements that I used. Try this link I think that you will find mostly what you are looking for. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=346948 I think this is the easiest way and a 1 man job for sure to take the cab off and probably a 2 man job to place it back the chassis.

Re: 1950 gmc build

The local junk yard is having a half off sale soon so I’m starting my treasure hunt list, and I have a few questions for you guys. I was reading on AD Engineering’s web site that you can swap over the spindles, rotors & calipers as an assembly from 98 and newer 2wd Blazers. The reason I like this idea is because the rotors are larger, & they have dual piston calipers. So my 1st question is will aftermarket 2” drop spindles for 98 & newer blazers fit my original a arms? (1983 S-15 Chassis) Can I just swap all the brake parts over to the S-10 spindle either stock or aftermarket 2” drop? Last question is what is going to give me the best ride 2” drop spindles or 2” lowering front springs? Either way I’m replacing the front springs I just need to know what size I’m getting. Thanks for the help.

Re: 1950 gmc build

I am curious about this as well. I had read you can use a disc brake blazer rearend too, just not sure what years to look for.

I think usually a spindle is going to be better because you are not changing the spring rate. I have coils on my crew cab and wish I had went with sprindles or lower control arms.

Re: 1950 gmc build

I used the '98-up 2wd Blazer spindle and dual piston caliper brakes on the one I'm building...excellent, inexpensive brake upgrade and completely bolt on with your stock a-arms. The aftermarket '98-up Blazer drop spindles will also bolt up and generally speaking, drop spindles are better than drop springs simply because they maintain factory suspension geometry and spring rates.

Another cool thing is that after you have switched to the Blazer spindles, you can buy a bracket that mounts C4/C5 Corvette brakes in case you ever want to add even more stopping power, or go auto-crossing, cone dodging, etc.

The only downside is that the hubs are kind of expensive (approx. $100 per side), so when you go to the boneyard, try to get some with low miles. If you can't find anything decent, there is a guy on fleabay that sells a lot of them. Good luck.

2ndGenRR, Thanks for the good info. I'm defiantly going to go that route now using 2" blazer drop spindles.

Re: 1950 gmc build

It’s been a busy 2 months for me. I have been working crazy hours and just welcomed my 2nd child on the 3rd one proud Dad here. Work has been steady in the garage a nice slow pace, sure wish I could get more done but oh well at least I’m making progress. I removed/installed the leaf spring hanger bushing. Experimented with some Rustoleum Undercoating and I must say I really like this stuff easy to spray and looks great with a semi gloss black finish. Cut off and grinded down all the original mounting brackets from a coil over rear end from an 80’s Monte Carlo. The rear end has newer 3.08 gears with a mini spool locker installed. Welded up new leaf spring pads and mocked them up on new 3” lowering leaf springs. I still have the brakes to do but will do them during final mock up. I will be heading to the junk yard tomorrow to get new axles as the ones that I have, have racing studs welded in. Moving on to the front end and just started tearing it down yesterday. Hope you enjoy the pics.

I would say check them all really good. Make sure there isn't any wear or play in them. At the same time though, can you be too safe?

Re: 1950 gmc build

I have a rookie question to ask. What is the rod that goes through upper control arm that mounts to the chassis and has bushings on it called? Who sells them?

Re: 1950 gmc build

Looks like the neighbors are worried you are running a chop shop there. Got the coppers out keeping an eye on you!

Looking good.

For the core support on my son's '54 Chevy, I ran 1 x 2" stock inside the channel with notches cut where the captured nuts sit and then I put bottom plates on those, ran flat rubber cut from an old tire sidewall as a slight insulator, and bolted them to the frame.

On the HAMB I've got a build thread on doing a bit of that and cutting my inner fenders down to fit the S10 frame. I know it isn't GMC but it might give an idea.

Re: 1950 gmc build

I have decided to go ahead and replace the outer & inner tie rods, sleeves, center link, & idler arm. Does anyone know where to buy them as a kit, or good just a reliable web site? I already looked at speedway, summit & jegs.

Re: 1950 gmc build

I bought my front end rebuild kit from Spohn Performance. Part #E-FRTKIT-S10-8295, http://www.spohn.net/shop/1982-2003-...sion-Steering/

Maybe not the least expensive, but really nice stuff.

We don't drink together but I have a sheriff and State cop down the street. I like to think having the presence of their cars in the neighborhood on a regular basis helps to keep the riff raff away. Both are car guys too so that helps too.

Re: 1950 gmc build

Just wanted to give an update. I have the front end completely torn apart & I'm in the process of removing all the bushings from the control arms and came across an awesome super easy bushing puller. It is quick and a lot easier than any other method that I have tried. Check out the video.
