2GV Success !

The little 307 in my 71 C/2 has never run properly since I got it . Since it’s only used during the warm months I just put up with the hard starting and crappy drivability. I sent the 2 GV off to a reputable shop in Philly. $225.00 + shipping both ways resulted in a beautiful looking specimen. Dropped it on and the trunk ran great for a while. Seemed like the more I drove the truck the worse it ran. I called the shop and was told it was probably plugged with trash from the tank. I pulled the fuel filter but found no signs of anything. Decided to take the carb apart to inspect the float and needle and seat. All new parts, brass float looking perfect. Yesterday I reinstalled it along with a fuel pressure regulator set to 3.5 lbs. did not touch anything else. Engine now starts great and runs better than ever. Just to confirm it was getting to much pressure I tested the pump, 9lbs…

That's great. I haven't found a low pressure mechanical pump in the past 5 years that matched its rating; they're usually higher unfortunately.

Re: 2GV Success !

Glad to hear that solved your problem - is there a reason you didn't just install a new fuel pump if you knew it was putting out 9 psi? Although... that might have been more expensive and another roll of the dice on the pump compared to just adding the regulator like you did - so probably a wise move, just curious. It's unfortunate the poor quality/lack of consistency of pressure output of today's replacement pumps. Is 3.5 psi spec for a 2GV? (I thought 5-6 psi (max) was usually the recommended sweet spot for most carbs) I can see how 9 psi would definitely have been causing problems though.

Good move. A fuel regulator is a great upgrade. I run them in 4wds to eliminate float issues from bumping around, driving on a tilt, and steep inclines. Many go to fuel injection for the same need. Not necessary. Run as built and just add the regulator. Trucks should have come with them

Re: 2GV Success !

I really didn’t know the pump was the problem, but I had the regulator lying around and figured why not install it ? After reading as much as I could find on these cabs and viewing a few Mikes Carburetor’s videos , everything pointed to excessive pressure. The 2G is a fine piece if you can just figure out the two external linkages that control the accelerator pump and the fast idle. When you do it’s not that difficult to fine tune everything. Thanks for listening.

Re: 2GV Success !

thanks - I'm glad it worked out well. Plus it was probably a relief to know your carb shop did a nice job for you.

Re: 2GV Success !

Which regulator did you use?

And what do the other guys here recommend?

Re: 2GV Success !

I used a Mr Gasket style but would not recommend it because it has no bracket to secure it properly. I know you can zip Ty it but I have seen better ones with mounting provisions.
