8.1L Propane Engine from Schwan's Truck

Howdy all,

I've been looking for an 8.1L swap candidate for my '86 454 Suburban. I recently located a low-miles 8.1L out of a Schwan's ice cream truck, set up to run liquid propane injection. It already has the medium duty truck accessory brackets I need to run A/C in my squarebody, and should be super clean inside due to being run purely on propane all it's life.

My question involves the process to convert it back to gasoline operation. Based on a lot of searching, it seems that the conversion involves different fuel
tank, fuel lines, injectors and tuning, but the engine itself, including the wiring harness and ECM appear to be physically the same. Is it as simple as putting gas injectors back in the fuel rail and flashing the ECM back to a gasoline motor tune? If that's all I need, I'm going to jump on it. If the process is more involved than that, I'd like to weigh my options on what I'm getting into. Anyone have experience with these conversions?

Thanks!

Re: 8.1L Propane Engine from Schwan's Truck

Underneath the fueling system the engines are basically the same. I'm not sure about the details of the 8.1, but I'd research compatibility of intake manifolds for different years. Your swap might be as simple as switching the intakes and dropping it in.
