Nice! Can't wait to see that in the crew cab! I forget, but aren't your tires 255 85 16?

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Yep 255/85R16 cooper ST's. Going to be a little while before I stab it in the truck. I want to go through it pretty well and only do this once. I'm tired of swapping motors...

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Just about torn down. No major surprises thus far. There was a ton of slop in the timing set so it is on the list of parts to be replaced. Lifters all looked good.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Thanks guys. Imagine my surprise when I received my piston rings, which I plunked down $55 for, and found that the set was the set of rings for one freaking piston. $440 for piston rings?!? I like using GM parts but that is freaking ridiculous. Any suggestions for a quality affordable set of rings?

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

my best guess would be to talk to a friendly machineshop that does cookie cutter engine rebuilds
to be able to get the best profit out of their engines there allways looking at the lowest price for stuff like that , they usually have a good idea of the quality too
might allso be able to just take measurements of those rings and look at a universal ring suplier , these usually have a sort of hollander manual with sizes instead of types of engines

My machine shop sells me Hastings, I used them on my last two engine builds with no issues.

Thanks Dave. Hastings 2c4718 set of 8 piston ring sets for $87.32 from Amazon with free shipping. That's more like it.

No wonder a new truck starts at $40K. LOL glad you found a less expensive route.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

cheapest would prolly be to use a stock GM TBI on the standard carb manifold

semisequentional (batch firing ignition and injection ) :
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/index.php
fully sequentional (can use ls type ignition coils and delete the distributor with this one) :

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

So I just bought this truck at auction. Been looking for a plow and new ones are over $6k. Plan is to steal the plow and flip the truck. Pressure is on.

1984 K30, 9' flat bed with Tommy lift, 8' Meyer plow, 292, th400, np205 SRW and 4.56 gears.

Don't really like the wear on this main bearing. Think the crank just earned itself a trip to the machine shop.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Man Marcus, I wish we lived closer. I would love to have that K30 for dirty job truck. I'm a sucker for bare bones trucks anyway. It looks clean! Like, keeper kind of clean but I know…you can’t keep them all. At least that is what my wife say when I drag home strays.

You’re going to love that L29 when it is all said and done. You know how to reach me if you run into any brick walls with the swap.

Mush on!

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

Thanks Larry. You're about the 12'th person to tell me that truck is too clean to flip. Oddly enough none of those people are my wife... It's not quite as clean as it looks with a little rust here and there, but appears to be in excellent working order, has good studded tires and a fresh heater core due to the original blowing up when I drove it away from the school district that I bought it from.

Turns out they bought it new, as the title is dated 1984. There were some customizations done that I would have skipped. They added a 4D heavy truck battery instead of a larger alternator and second battery. A huge company radio was positioned on a piece of plate steel that would whack you in the shin every time you hit a bump. It's gone but I kept the battery setup.

Today I'm going to drive it 360 miles back to Fairbanks where the low temp tonight is supposed to be -26. Should be fun. I'll take some more pictures.

Made it. I took the plow off and loaded it in the bed before departure. Power lift gate works like a champ.

4 stops for gas, 1 burger and a 2 lbs. hammer to bang on the dragging rear break and we made it. That's a long ride with no radio. Good thing I had a buddy along to chat.

Re: 1991 V3500 Project Heavy Hauler

I like the new lineup. I averaged 7 mpg on the trip. That seems really bad even with short axle fears and no OD and a heavy ass truck. Averaged 55-65 mph.
