Good Wrench engine

Last weekend my neighbor gave me a 350 that he was going to put in a project but never did. The engine has been sitting for awhile, not sure how long. It is a Good wrench, I pulled the heads the other night and will pull a main and rod bearing to take a look. First question: are these engines built new and stock dimensions? 2:I may have to bore it cylinder wall on a couple don't look promising, Is it worth it ?
The engine wants to turn over but a lot of crud keeping it from doing so.
I can get a rering kit from Summit for like $80 bucks.

Re: Good Wrench engine

The Goodwrench engine was made to be a direct replacement for the stock 350. There were a variety of them depending on application, both 2 and 4 bolt main.

Re: Good Wrench engine

Whether it is worth it or not depends on what you want out of the engine. While you have it apart and going thru it, you may as well upgrade the cam.

Re: Good Wrench engine

Hot Rod and Car Craft have used these engines as the basis of performance buildups for decades -- even as far back as the days when GM called them the Targetmaster engines. So not a bad starting point.

Re: Good Wrench engine

Well like said in first post, I wanted to know if the rods, mains and bore are standard. I didn't know if these were remanned engines or NEW. If it is not remanned then it will probably get honed and reringed, and put some new shells in it and run it for awhile till I decide what I am going to put in it later, I'm thinking big block. The engine that is in it is VERY tired and burns oil. I think its the original motor. Summit has a rering kit for like $80.

was thinking about that, I may as well throw a little juice to it while I,m in there. I am going to buy one of the edelbrock carb and manifold combos. don't know what I want for a cam yet... any suggestions nothing crazy just something mild. I pulled a rod and one of the mains this evening and they look REAL good.
I want it reliable. edelbrock kit #2021

Re: Good Wrench engine

A Summit #1102 or #1103 cam and lifter set. The #1102 is the exact same cam as the Edelbrock Performer cam, but a bit less money.

Re: Good Wrench engine

Bought one of those years ago for my truck. Worked great. Direct replacement for a tired 350.

If yours has the dish pistons, might consider replacing those since it sounds like you are pulling them anyway.

Be sure to price the cost of machine work vs the cost of buying a new similar engine.

Those are terrible cams compared to whats available today, they've gotta be 30yr old designs by now. Plenty of good options out there.

Terrible?? While I do believe that more expensive grinds may be superior, I certainly wouldn't call them terrible. I run a Melling MTC-1 which is pretty much the same 30 year old economical cam and it works fine in my 50 year old motor.

Re: Good Wrench engine

I wouldn't say they are terrible cams, just old school tech. Are there better cams? Yes. But the OP sounds top be on a budget and just needs to get an engine running. I doubt he really wants to spend $200 on an more modern flat tappet cam and lifter set.
