Poll - Your Radio Antenna for 1971-1972 Chevy

Attempting to establish the antennas that came stock on a 71-72. See Dave's response. It's the best explanation I've seen, but I'm still not ready to declare it the rule.

From what I've seen on original trucks and my GM/Delco parts book, telescoping antenna masts were on trucks with AM radios covering all years. AM/FM optioned trucks starting in '70, had fixed masts. I'm not saying there aren't exceptions out there but this is what I've seen. FWIW.

Me too.....Go figure the results so far. Interested how the person who knows their fixed mast with AM radio is correct.

I could not vote as I have a hidden radio in my BuddyBucket console and a hidden power antenna in the left front stake pocket .I used a delete plate in the cab.

I removed it from a low mile (50k) 72 a few years back and I have no reason to believe it has been removed at any point. On the other hand my blue 72 had a fixed antenna with an am radio until I swapped it for a used telescopic one last year

Re: Poll - Your Radio Antenna for 1971-1972 Chevy

Interesting..........I have a fixed mast AM as well. Other than brake pads, alternator, battery and such, I've seen nothing on this truck that's a replacement. I bought this in 1989, it had 93K.

It was a one owner truck. Only alterations were a boat launching hitch, a receiver hitch in the rear welded to a step bumper (not sure if GM add-on), four brackets mounted to the rear frame for a 5th wheel (wasted the floor of bed). Of course he had saddle tanks, and a CB I've never seen.......The guy liked RVing, but lucky for me a C/10 short bed was the wrong way to go about it.

Re: Poll - Your Radio Antenna for 1971-1972 Chevy

My 70 GMC with a stock AM radio (has been changed now) also has a fixed antenna. As I am the second owner I can't guarantee it is the one that came with it, but pretty darn sure it is.

Re: Poll - Your Radio Antenna for 1971-1972 Chevy

I suspect Dave is correct, however GM was using up their inventory where they needed to. I wouldn't be shocked if more 71 AM radios had a fixed mast than 72.

Re: Poll - Your Radio Antenna for 1971-1972 Chevy

Just a thought. My 72 with original AM Radio has the original telescoping antenna. My truck was built in Janesville so could it be that the antennas are a plant specific thing that is why some have fixed and some have telescoping antennas on their original trucks.

My Flint 72 k1500 survivor has its original AM radio and has a telescoping antenna. My recently sold survivor c30 72 Fremont OEM AM truck also had a telescoping antenna. I have a NOS telescoping antennae that says "AM..." on the box. I'm going to use a telescoping antenna on my current build with an added OEM Am/Fm because the fixed antenna for an FM doesn't clear my garage door.

Lets bring this thread back to life! Big Orange has the a/m with a fixed mast and it also is a low mile survivor. It's all original down to the carpet. That's why I want a fixed mast for my new Super .

I agree, without getting into theory, antennas are cut for specific bandwidth. I have notice the same on GM truck antennas over the years between GM telescopic and fixed mast antennas. It's hard to located a decent OE fixed mass truck antenna (FM) anymore and the aftermarket stuff is a little flimsy - So, I'm modifying a NOS GM fixed mass 1978/82 Monte Carlo FM antenna to work on my truck.

I will add my $.02....I think fixed mast is 72 only like a lot of the other things about 72's. another one year only thing. I have 3 - 72's right now and 2- 71's, both 71's hasve a telescoping mast. One of the 72's is an AM/FM truck and they all have the same fixed mast antenna.

My 72 GMC parts truck has AM/FM listed on the spid and what appears to be the original telescoping antenna. The radio was long gone but there was no evidence the antenna had ever been off the truck.

Just thought of this...the mast section is removable, I bet some masts got changed for "better" reception, adding the telescopic mast to make it like the older trucks..."that new-fangled fixed mast sucks"...I'm changing that out for the old style antenna....

I couldn't vote as mine is a chain store special base with a piece of #9 wire that I brazed to a flat washer...

I recently bought an OER(the ones in the yellow and black boxes) brand replacement fixed shaft and it is beautiful.

Funny you should bring that up. Personally, a fixed mast with a high crown bezel is the best of both worlds. That and my truck's been this way since I got it.

I ended up with NOS for a factory 67-68 Corvette, which is a fat ball fixed mast on a high crown. It may not be stock but I like it.

Looks like the original antenna to me. I have the same on my 72, though an AM radio.

I'm restoring my truck and recently purchased a teloscopic antenna from classic truck parts. I went to install it on my truck and the hole on the cowl is too small. Does anyone know if the solid mast antennas have smaller mounts compared to the teloscopics? Instructions were provided to make the hole larger but I really didn't wanna do that. Any info would be appreciated!

I'm not sure how to vote ? Is the coat hanger with duct tape retainer considered "fixed mast or adjustable" ??

Re: Poll - Your Radio Antenna for 1971-1972 Chevy

I have wondered about this since I bought my truck. I have a Stock AM/FM (SPID) and a very long telescoping antenna. How long is the antenna suppose to be?
I have A 72 Cheyenne super LWB C10.
Thanks K.E.N.
