Re: Rear Brake Drum Dilemma

I ordered Centric part#123.63028 from Rockauto and they were finned with "8943" cast into the drums. I sent them back and haven't look for replacements yet.

What rear do you have? Is it a Dana 44 from a GMC? And if so, did it originally have coil springs or leaf springs?

If yours is like mine (originally leaf springs) that drum won't work. I tried one and mentioned that earlier in the thread.

Re: Rear Brake Drum Dilemma

Yup. Best bet is the Wagoneer drums and find a reasonable machine shop to enlarge the center hole and drill the lug holes larger.
My guy charged me $40 a piece. Since the Wagoneer drums are cheap, the total price is still good.

Btw, all the other parts are available for these rears including new trac-lok (posi) carriers. My rear originally had 3.54 gears and an open diff. Both the gears and spiders were shot. A new trac-loc was hardly any more $ than replacement spiders.
Too bad the original gears were bad. I like the ratio and replaced them with new Dana 3.54 gears. So everything was replaced except for the axles and yoke. They were good.

Re: Rear Brake Drum Dilemma

$40 a piece is a bargain. I think I paid for 2 hours at $120/hr at Hat Racing in San Rafael. The guy was nice but I feel it was too expensive. The good news is he did excellent work. He was the only guy I could find with a lathe big enough to turn them.

Re: Rear Brake Drum Dilemma

that's what I'm worried about Someone around here capable at a decent price, what if I take my time and drill put the lugs first then carefully grind down the center

That's outrageous!
My guy just had a small machine shop out in back of his house and only worked in it part time. I can't see where any machine shop couldn't do this.
