2003 GMC Crew cab

I was wondering if some one know the best way to wake up a factory 8.1L motor as in simple upgrades. I heard the computer or mas sensor hold engine back because it has to much power.

they have torque management programmed into the pcm to retard the timing when you get on it to protect and extend the life of the transmission. Otherwise they make so much torque it will eventually toast the tranny. You can have it programmed out but be prepared to improve the trans, or be replacing it.

Nice truck!

www.blackbearperformance.com for a custom ecm tune - do your bolt on mods first, then get the tune.

headers, 2.5" duals is a good start, maybe a K&N FIPK. That's pretty much what I do to all my vehicles to wake them up.

Re: 2003 GMC Crew cab

Speaking of duals i had to go with a dual in and out magnaflow muffler as i kept breaking mufflers. They would over heat and crack. 1st one was a turbo muffler dual in and factory single out , 2nd was flowmaster dual in and factory single out and now on 3rd one dual in and dual out with 3" pipes go just over rear axle. They only last 9 months. The magnaflow now is definatley discolored a reddish purpleish color. I tow a 35 ft campring trailer with a golf cart in the bed, with all other cargo about 10k lbs. The truck checks out OK on the computer but i think it is running lean, but only gets 8 mpg? Any advise will be appriciated.

The stock exhaust system was made to handle a big gas engine while towing with converters, Aftermarket is NOT. If you remove the converters & have a custom tune done, Your mufflers will last longer.

I recommend you install the factory exhaust back on the truck.

You can remove the cats all together & have the catalyst monitors turned OFF with a custom PCM tune, No check engine light, Will pass emissions as long as they dont do a visual on the converters. Its against "federal" law to do this.
