Caliper problem

I have installed lowering spindles on my '68 with 1 1/4" rotors. When I go to local suppliers they want to give me calipers for 1" rotors, saying that's all they have listed? Can someone tell me what calipers I should ask for? Year, description, Etc? Thanks,

Smitty

Re: Caliper problem

1 1/4" rotor = Heavy Duty
1" rotor = Light Duty

1972 through 1980orso Chevy 1/2 ton 2WD V8 Heavy Duty brake caliper should do it.

Re: Caliper problem

I appreciate the response, but I have done numerous searches and come up with zero listing for heavy duty calipers on those years. 1 1/4" rotors are easily found, but no caliper listing for either "heavy duty" or for 1 1/4" rotors. Local parts houses like Oreillys, Advance, Auto Zone same result. Even Classic Muscle, which is part of a Chevy dealer- same result. What am I missing Here?

Re: Caliper problem

73-80 calipers. They will be for 1 1/4 rotors. During that time span there was only one rotor thickness, which was 1 1/4. Only later did the 1 inch rotor come out and the words heavy and light duty come into play to differentiate so that's why you can't find any heavy duty 73-80 calipers.

Re: Caliper problem

I'm looking on RockAuto.com for 1972 Chevy...

Both C10 and C20 show same calipers...

Wagner part number: CR76816 and CR76817 for Left/Right respectively

The pictures they have there look exactly like the calipers I have on my 67 with 72 suspension and lowering spindles with the 1 1/4" thick rotors.

The Rockauto link to the C20 partws:

Re: Caliper problem

The 71-72 caliper is almost exactly like the 73-87 caliper except for a slight variance around where the hose bolts on.

It doesn't matter which one you use, they use the same pads and bolt on in place of each other. The main consideration is that the later brake hoses certainly open up more options, making the 73-87 caliper win out by a small margin (in my opinion)

Re: Caliper problem

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that the calipers went to metric threads in 78 or 79. The banjo bolts on the 78+ calipers are slightly smaller ( 10mm vs 7/16" ) so they will fit sloppy in the earlier hoses. Other than that, the rest of the caliper is the same.
