It is my understanding that the only visible difference between a 69 and 70 is the plastic inner grill. The 69 had an "egg-crate" grill and the 70 had horizontal slats, sorta like this:

I have not found a parts guy that sells separate inner grills for the 69 and 70. They all sell one grill that is listed for both 69 and 70 and looks like the egg-crate.
Are the 70 grills rare?

No one had made the '70 insert in a long time. GM stopped shortly after this gen of trucks was discontinued.
You'll either have to search for a good used one, or explain it to the hand full of people who catch it.
I wouldn't even waste my time on N.O.S. They been gone for so long, that I doubt there are any left anywhere.

Only difference between 69 adn 70 inner grills are the rows of eggcrate, 69 has 4 row on top and 4 on bottom for a total of 8. 70 has 6 on top, 6 on bottom for a total of 12. I think they only reproduce 69 inners because there isnt enough of a market to reproduce both 69 and 70 inners.

maybe if the spacing is right(i don't know the measurements) you can use a hacksaw and cut some of the egg crate out to make the repro grille look like the one you want.

looks like an easy thing to do if you take care you can modify a 69 grill to look like a 70. cut out the undesired pieces, sand and paint.

All good information, but I'm not hunting for a 70 inner grill. I'm putting together a file to detail the visual differences in the 67-72 pickups. Most models are easy to tell apart visually, except the 69 and 70. The only thing I can find that was different was the inner grill. As I started to hunt around for photos of the 70 inner grill, I found out they seem to be very rare, and so was curious what knowledge others might have.

Josh - I agree the 70 had 6 rows on top and 6 rows on bottom and looked like this:

But I can't find any photos of 69 inner grill with 4 on 4 like you describe. All the ones I find look like this: Anybody have photos of the grill Josh descibes?

Check my website, I have a really good front shot of my 69 grill there.
I think Josh is describing the 69 grill which as far as I know has only one "version"

Oh and another thing, the outer grills on the 2 trucks that you posted look like they are not the originals. Look at the end of the grill middle next to the turn signals, compare that to the same area on my truck. There is a little bit of difference. I can post a close up shot of these areas later if you want or care to see them.

Gee_Emm - Yes, your grill is the "egg-crate" type typical of 69 models. I may have misinterpreted Josh's post. When he says that the 69 has four rows on top and bottom I think he is referring to the horizontal rows. The 70 model also has only has 4 horizontal rows on top and bottom but it has six sets of vertical bars on the top and bottom where the 69 has 43.

I confess I don't see the difference your mentioned in the outer grill, but I only posted the pics to represent the differences in the the inner grill.

BTW, non of this is terrible important, but it's kinda fun to talk about.

Here's an original '69 inner/outer grill. As Gee_Emm mentioned the grooves next to the turn signals go all the way through to the headlight. On reproductions (either GM or otherwise) the lines don't go through. They stop at the turn signals (at least the ones I've seen):

here's another question. I have a 69 and also a 70 that I think is origial. It looks to me that maybe they just painted the horizonal bars on the 70 silver so that they stand out but actually the 69 and 70 are the same? I'll go look at my 70 just to make sure.

Ok, I looked and that is exactly the case. they are both the same plastic piece but the 70 grille has the vertical bars painted silver or white. if you look close the part that is painted is raised from the rest. Gee_Emm's CLOSEUP, WOW, shows this pretty well. I also have 2 outer grilles that i believe to be original but I have one of each kind.? I dunno maybe one isn't original.

My 69 which as far as I know is original has the 4 on 4 grill, just like Gee Emm's. I can post a pic if you need another one, but my grill is pretty banged up ever since it impacted a datsun at 30mph.... I've seen a few 70s with only the horizontal fins painted so it gives the effect of having bars across the middle.

Also I noticed on the second black 70, it has 71-72 style polished aluminum headlight trim instead of 69-70 black painted pieces.

take a look at my post "Bunch of parts for sale" on the parts board. one is from my 69 the other is from my 70. they both look correct but if you get up close the 70 is the same as my 69. I am positive that the 70 is factory. both of them look just like Gee_Emm's, except the 70 has the horizontal fins painted just like Josh said.

I also have had a 70, grill, I knoe it was original becouse I spoke to the 2 owners before me, and the widow of the original owner. (that is everyone who owned it) It was confirmed that the only damage it ever recieved we a smack in the @ss. I wish I had a close up, but it looked d@mn near like johnnyp's picture.

mine looks exactly like johnnyp's picture from that distance but when you get close it is exactly the same as a 69 grille.

Get up close and they both have the eggcrate just like in Gee_Emm's pic.

Great information and pics! From the discussion and pics I'm going with the assumption that the 69 and 70 grill are identical except for the paint schemes. So, until somebody proves this assumption wrong, here's what I'm recording for the 1970 model:

No, there is more of a difference then just the paint on the 69 and 70 grills. The outer shells are the same. The inner grills are two compeltely different pieces of plastic. You could not take a 69 inner and slap some paint on it and turn it into a 70. The area on the 70 inner grills that has the paint on it is acutally raised a bit if I recall correctly. That and the size of the holes in the inners are different. The 69 has more squareish holes and the 70 has more rectangular holes.

Gee_Emm's CLOSEUP, WOW, shows this pretty well. I also have 2 outer grilles that i believe to be original but I have one of each kind.? I dunno maybe one isn't original. I can post a pic if you need another one, but my grill is pretty banged up ever since it impacted a datsun at 30mph.... I've seen a few 70s with only the horizontal fins painted so it gives the effect of having bars across the middle. I am positive that the 70 is factory. both of them look just like Gee_Emm's, except the 70 has the horizontal fins painted just like Josh said. (that is everyone who owned it) It was confirmed that the only damage it ever recieved we a smack in the @ss. This is the 70. This is the 69. Gee_Emm Account Suspended Join Date: Sep 2000 Posts: 4,002	No, there is more of a difference then just the paint on the 69 and 70 grills. The outer shells are the same. The inner grills are two compeltely different pieces of plastic. You could not take a 69 inner and slap some paint on it and turn it into a 70. The area on the 70 inner grills that has the paint on it is acutally raised a bit if I recall correctly. That and the size of the holes in the inners are different. The 69 has more squareish holes and the 70 has more rectangular holes.
