Has anyone used a GPS Speedo

I'm planning to add a GPS with a speedo function. I wouldn't consider a GPS speedo alone altho some new cars have them. Given areas with no coverage I wonder what happens.

I looked at this setup a few months ago, what you do is get an electronic speedo, and then buy a GPS box that plugs into the back of it.

I wanted to learn more about GPS speedo and a quick search on EBAY left me astounded. I have a heads-up thru the windshield speedo display in my brand new 45K car that apparently you can replicate for as little as $13. Looks like we are in for interesting times ahead.

My buddy installed one on his 73 Camaro and really likes it. He liked that it didn't require a calibration.

I run a GPS unit in my truck, SpeedHut gauges. Been running it for 55K plus now, works great. White for daytime, blue at night. Ya gotta love an LS with overdrive. As far as loosing signal, I have never lost a solid reading and I live out in the sticks. It's GPS so it's getting it's signals from satellites, unless they fall from the sky you should be fine.

Why pay for an actual speedo? Just download a free speedometer app for your phone and set it on the dash. I use one called DigiHUD, so called because you can even project it onto your windshield:

Neat idea. I might put that in my phone to have as a backup.

But in some states, such as this one, the vehicle is required to have a working speedometer and odometer installed. Without them the vehicle will not pass a state inspection.

also the phone option wont work in no cell coverage areas. i used my garmin gps for the speedo function in my 71 chevelle that had a bad speedo. i am looking at the gps sender for my buick so i can upgrade the gauges but keep the original tranny for now.

Seems a cheap GPS will do for a speedo AND have all the other bells and whistles like maps, traffic, nav, elevation and on forever. Most GPS link to phone and all those other world of apps. The only thing left is wireless gauges. A large gps/tablet could do all of this and even show pixs of your trucks build. The dash in a new Tesla is just a laptop screen i understand, Just amazing

I used a Speedhut GPS speedo on my build, I don't know how well it works because it won't be on the road until next summer.

I'm using an old phone that isn't even connected to a carrier and it still works for a GPS speedometer.

The phone ones work great as long as you have phone service. They are really great for checking the accuracy of the speedometer in your truck or any rig you are working on. They aren't that reliable when you get in areas with spotty cell service. sure beat the hell out of having your buddy follow you down the road at a certain speed to tell you what his read when you gave him the signal to check. Guys in their 60's and 70's will remember that one.

I've got a handheld GPS that I use on my sailboat that I have also used as a speedometer for the 1 ton flatbed 77 that I tow it with. No problem except in tunnels or sometimes in cities with tall buildings or in one case under a thick overhead tree canopy where you couldn't even see the sky though the trees.

I think Speedhut and a few others have GPS drives that operate the stock speedometer on your truck. That would be a real headache saver for most of us who have to calculate what drive and driven gear combo we need to match what we have and then turn around and do it again when we change to a different height tire.

Still looking for a 7" tablet with a GPS chip (with direct satellite link). Cell Phone service along our s Oregon coast is not good and speedo use appears just as bad. Not even the much advertised Sirius Satellite radio works reliably. Fades in and out and dies often. My Little old 4" Garmin works like a champ for a speedo/gps but is very limited is other applications. Think i will find what i need soon.

i have my neighbors old phone stuck to the console
sort of ugly the way the charger plugs in but spot on accuracy
my stock speedo is accurate at 60 mph only
a little over under and a little under over, if you know what i mean

Could it be the phone has a GPS chip or logs onto wifi? W/o service i don't see how the latter is possible.

Those GPS Heads Up Display devices don't have cell service or wifi. They only have a GPS chip.

I know and this is my dilemma Why don't tablets have chips?

most tablets do, make sure location services or gps is turned on
i just checked: my $49 nook has it as does my wife's 5 yr old samsung tablet

wifi or phone service can only approximate your location
if your tablet shows your location on maps app it has gps (assuming location services is on)
my pc does not have gps i have to tell it where i am by zip code or address if i want to know distance to a location
