Loctite 518 gasket maker is a non-corrosive, anaerobic sealer designed primarily for use on aluminum, iron, and steel flanged mating surfaces. It's ideal for on-the-spot emergency repairs, or when a conventional gasket is out-of-stock. 518 gasket maker fills gaps of up to 0.050 in. and forms a flexible, solvent-resistant seal that will not tear or decay. Parts will disassemble easily even after extended service, and old gasket material can be removed with a putty knife.

Suggested applications include:

* Water pumps
* Thermostat housings
* Transmission pans
* Transmission case covers
* Transaxle casings
* O-ring replacement

Thanks for the tip Jfort, and the kind words.

I have driven it daily now for about a year and a half, no leaks, no problems.

Hey TR, what are your thoughts on this? I don't normally cut corners but this is tempting. In your opinion is this a viable option if you are careful or is it too risky?

Your kit seems complete but the accelerators may seem to be low in quality but nevertheless it is a good call. Good to see the output is great!

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

Critter,

There was another thread that used this approach on our site recently. If I had it to do over I might try it that way. Seems reasonable and saves a lot of work.

Good luck,

TR

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

Thanks TR. I am really itching to put a t56 in the step side from my signature. Maybe I will give it a try.

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

I used an LT T56. It will bolt right up to the SBC cheaper than a LS will.

You need a special flywheel and the stock clutch kit. I used this flywheel...
Flywheel - CKGM-20010 $169 from American Powertrain.

Use a slave cylinder from a 1990 comaro. cheaper and better than stock, with the same stroke and bore size. I used a wilwood master cylinder, 260-3376. I followed the hydraulic clutch write up that I think TR did.

A stock auto-trans mount will work if your motor is in the V8 location.

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

Hey Allen,

Thanks for the kind words. I really love the T56, radical first four gears then two more for cruising and mpg's.

Sorry I don't know all the in's and out's of the various T56 flavors except that there are a lot of them.

Sounds like dznucks has the hot ticket.

Good luck with the conversion. If I can help otherwise, let me know.

TR

Yes. I am positive. It is a custom made flywheel just for this application, Gen I SBC and LT T56. The prices may have gone up, but thats what my reciept says. There website is completely different now, they may not offer them anymore.

Looks like you guys missed out.

I paid a total of $169 for my flywheel and that was with an additional $20 to lighten it.

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

Missed something cuz my McLeod was $515 with shipping and tax to my door. Centerforce makes one, price is about the same. Ram also makes one but it's aluminum and weighs only 18 pounds. A bit light in a 3000+ puckup in my opinion. You say you had yours lightened? Whats it weigh?

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

Why do you need a special flywheel for the LT? Couldn't you use a stock flywheel out of a Camaro that had the t56?

If I read that correctly, the special flywheel is for a 2-piece rear main seal engine. If you were to have a 1-piece rear main seal engine (like the 1993-1997 LT1 for example), then I don't see why you couldn't use the Camaro flywheel (sans the fact that they may be a little weaker for a heavy truck).

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

I just finished putting a T56 behind my gen 1 383 with 2 piece rear seal. I used an LS T56 with a $200 adapter plate and $20 extended pilot bushing. Doing it this way allows you to retain all the gen 1 flywheel/clutch/bell/linkage. No silly expensive custom flywheel, much larger & less expensive clutch selection than the LT pull style.

Also, Keisler just went out of business in January.....so their shifter relocation is now extinct. There's another company I think that makes a "kit" to do it for about the same price ($400ish). I've only seen them on ebay. I did it much cheaper with some creativity and robbing some CTS-V tranny parts along with a custom shifter base, but it's not a bolt-in deal for sure.

Re: T56 Shifter Location Change

Thanks guys for the replys. I guess I skipped over the 2 piece rear main seal part of the post. I believe I have a one piece rear main seal. Already got the Kiesler kit last fall, just in time. I guess I need to do a little more research and figure out exactly what I got so I know what all I need to order.

Can to share what parts you used and how you did this? I've got a T56 to put in my 66 and I wasn't going to get the $400 kit. I was just going to let the shifter come thru the floor where ever it came thru. But if you have a cheaper way of doing it ...

My tranny is still out so it's the ideal time to do this ...

X2, I'm debating between a shifter relocation and some internal upgrades for my T56, or if I should go to a Magnum T56. Would love to see what you did!
