How to replace a column wiper/cruise/bright switch?

I did a search on this but could not find anything specific to what I need.
Looks like I need to replace the column switch on my 87 that controls the delay wipers, cruise control, and also the bright lights. I am having a problem with the wipers & I believe I have narrowed it down to the switch.

What my question is what needs to be done to replace the switch? Does the column need to be disassembled completely, or just enough to get to the switch? What about the wiring?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

It was actually a pretty easy repair. But I don't remember taking the air duct out.

If you never want to do this agian, you can go to the junk yard, and get a pre 1985 collumn, and intall a floor mounted bright switch, and dash mounted wiper switch. You can get the things I just mentioned off any pre 1985 square, and many other pre '85 GM vehicles. I find this set-up surperior, as you do not have to tear apart a collumn to fix a single switch.

But you don't have to tear the column apart to fix this. And it will probably the only time one would have to replace their switch. Just sayin'

Re: How to replace a column wiper/cruise/bright switch?

Man i just did this! I changed turn sig/wiper switch, the main electrical column switch, ignition cylinder, and the turn cancel cam. It is a complete PIA. a lot of small parts in there. take good notes or a lot of cell phone pics. My advice is to decide what all you need to do so you only have to tear into it once. not sure what links are already posted but there are a couple good you tube vids that will walk you thur the process. Good luck!

Re: How to replace a column wiper/cruise/bright switch?

Thanks guys, appreciate all the great info.

Now I'm thinking it is most likely the wiper switch itself & not the stalk.
Have to do some more investigating as the switch is considerably more $.
