Quonset hut

Any one else into these buildings?

Cheap shelter.
I think the armed forces made these buildings popular.

For some reason I always wanted one.
Last year my wife and I were looking for property to buy in Arizona.
A winter getaway!

What do you know, a property showed up with this on it.

'You like it babe'. Yea. "I really want it". Me too

The next day it was ours.

One half is living space.
The other half is a shop/garage.

When I was in high school in the early 70s we had classes in them.
Cold in the winter hot in the summer.

My dad and i worked in one for many years. No insulation at all. Super hot and cold. I hope yours is better than ours.

Wonder if you could use that spray foam insulation to help with the heating/cooling problems.

Whenever I think of quonset huts I think of Gomer Pyle's marine camp.

Our town has one over to the fair grounds:



It's ancient. The balcony still has barrels of Civil Defense water and food for when they drop the big one. It has a hardwood floor and has seen more basket ball and volley ball games than you could count, plus the arts for the county fair.



It's on the chopping block, though. The county is gonna rebuild the fair grounds and the Quonset hut ain't part of the new plan. I'll hate to see it go.

Hey. Really dig them too. A buddy has one kinda in the sticks near Mt Shasta. Wood burning stove and we chain up and go cut Christmas trees and eat chili there each year. I'd love to find some propert to build one. Matt

I went to school in one too. I didn't notice the hot-cold thing but I was pretty young. A friend of mine had one on his property and it was his shop for many years..... Too cool!!

I think these came about for the military. Quick efficient shelter. Anyone know where the name originates? If you could just pop some windows in that would help. So does A/C. There were some pretty big ones. I can think of three in my life that stand out...Kendall Hardware in Clarksville,MD, "The Hut" (bar) in Woodboro,MD, and Moffit County Maintenance Garage in Maybell,CO. Oh yeah, 4 & 5, Automotive Industrial (machine shop) in Frederick,MD and House of Balance in Elkridge,MD.

Here is what we had to start with.

These are looking in the front door to the living space.
You can see how they dropped the ceiling down.
Notice you can only see the start of the curve to the far left and right, just above block wall
Through the door opening is the bedroom

The last two pictures are inside the bedroom
See the piece of plywood in the center. That is covering a window opening

Cool old $hit is always being torn down.
I guess that =s progress
We used to have a q-hut in the back of our high school
They kept all the sports equipment in it because it was out, close to the fields
During one of the expansions, it just disappeared
I think it was around the same time they decided to fill in the community's swimming pool.
Now for 10-20 years a community group has tried to get a new pool built to without success

I can't find a pic of the building,but I think the people were still dressing like this when they tore it down. Sometime shortly after I graduated from the HIgh school

I remember those things. Spent my 3rd and 4th grade in them at Downs barracks at Fulda Germany. 68/72 I do remember the hot and cold thing. It got dang cold in Germany in the winter.

Here is the start to the heating and cooling issue
It actually was started, because when I gutted the apartment inside
It rained for a few days.

This particular q-hut is bolted together, and it leaked slightly at some bolts.
Since my plan is to trick out the inside with wood.
It would be better to keep the water outside.
So
Since Foam roofing is popular down here in Arizona
(Sprayed on half the mobile homes, as their final roof coat)
It could be a solution to leaking, and also be the start of insulating the thing.
I talked to the best foam roofer around (if he didn't say so himself)
And, he said It would solve both problems
But
I struggled with, what it would look like.
I really like the corrugated metal with bolt look.
Don't worry he said. "It will just look like a fresh snow dusting"

That's a problem in my opinion 'we are in Arizona '
We didn't have much of a choice, so we went for it
Foam, with elastomeric paint on top that reflects the sun rays

You can still see the bolts, and the corrugation of the metal

Also check out the new old light fixture over the garage door
It came out of an old aviation hanger they tore down somewhere in the desert

I'll probably add another one on the other side of the door.
We also framed in the one in the bedroom
It's pretty cool how it was originally cut though the metal

It's lookin' good! I think it will make a great house/garage/shop or what ever you plan to use the extra space for.... Keep us updated.

Love the pop-top window. That place is just a culvert pipe split in two, isn't it? That is slick. I can see that place lookin' really nice in there. But once you get it all nice and cozy, better watch spending too much time out in that desert. People have been known to get a little "funny", if you know what I mean.

I worked in a huge one for a year or so.. It was very old, but still cool. It was almost 3 stories tall in the center. It had a 2nd story office area.. You would not know the difference once you were inside of it.

I've seen some large ones here and there, but that one sounds huge.

This one is pretty small
About 14'x64'
We ended up gutting the inside living space
You can see how low the ceiling line was, in top photo the 2x4 traveling along the metal edge on each side was the support for it
