Picked up a new project this weekend

This is a 1969 GMC 3500 sitting on a '76 3/4 4x4 frame with a dually rear end. Cab is in great shape for my part of the country. Only needs a small patch on the kick panel/ floor on driver side and a quarter spot on the passenger cab corner. Previous owner took the original truck apart and I am trying to find all the bolts and parts in boxes. Cant wait to have this truck as a useable work rig.

Thanks for looking...

Alright! Another dual rear 4wd. Does it have regular 3/4t wheels up front with simulators? Looks like Budds all around. Looks like you'll have the hauler work horse you've been needing

Re: Picked up a new project this weekend

Tim, Yes it has straight stock steel wheels on a D44 up front, for now. I will be keeping a look out for a D60 front axle with bud wheel design. I have an idea of putting the original fleet bed on it and narrowing the rear to fit under it like a few long horn duallys I have seen. Or it will be a flat bed dually 4x4. Either way it will be the work horse I have been looking for. If I had the cash and could find one. I would really like to put a 4bt/5speed in it.

I picked up the '70 C20 about three weeks ago after selling my '99 Toyota. I needed something to pull a full size trailer. Then I ran across this beast and could not pass it up. The '7o is 95% original and runs great. Factory 350/4sp leaf spring truck. Just had to put front brakes on it. It has pulled a car trailer with two beds on it already. Way better than my 2x4 Tacoma ever thought about doing.

Here is a picture of the interior and floor. I need more time to work on my projects. This will be a long term project. I have to get my c20 ready for hauling the lawn mower around come spring time for my extra income to play with these trucks.

I would recommend using a ford D60. Now i know that sounds dumb, but they have vacuum lock hubs. And if you plan on using it where you will need 4 wheel drive, it's kind of nice to just be able to push a button and lock the hubs in, cause it gets pretty annoying getting in and out to unlock the hubs so you can actually steer the darn thing. Not to mention being able have 2wd low, then 4wd low just by a push of a button.

That's just one more thing to go wrong in my opinion. I'd stay with the kingpin Chevy 60, they are tough as nails. I'd take manual hubs over anything else any day. Just my worthless .02
Looks like a pretty good start to a cool project.

That's the best part about the ford dana 60, the hubs can be manually locked if the vacuum doesn't work, or before you hook the vacuum up

Re: Picked up a new project this weekend

I "Will Not" put any f&^d parts on my GMC truck. I don't mind locking in the hubs and I know they are engaged at that point. No guessing about it, no vacuum leak worries. I like the simplistic idea of the older equipment. This will eventually be my "New" truck. I wouldn't own a new one for all the electronic parts that can go wrong with one. I can spend half the money on this and have a truck most people would drool over. I am not into that either. I just want a dependable, descent looking rig, I can use for anything and work on if need be.

Thank you for the information and suggestions though.

we have had to replace two of the "better ideas" from ford in the past couple weeks, one on a f150 and one on an f350. we put real hubs on the f350 but were stuck with the vacuum garbage on the 150. we can have 2wd low on our trucks-just don't lock the hubs in, i've done it numerous times. personally i will not have push button/vacuum 4wd, i want to know for sure when i'm locked in or out. i had to swap out a pair of automatic hubs on an 89 suburban on a colorado elk hunt - in freezing snow- when one wouldn't lock in, luckily we had the warn hubs in the truck, still in the box, just in case we needed them. should have changed them here before we left sunny california.
