Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

Sorry for the delay everyone, I have been passively waiting for my parts to return from the powder coater.

Come to find out a neighbor of mine owns a square body and an auto shop, we got to talking and he referred me to Ray at Powder Works just down the street from me. He is a great guy and does a ton of work for all the track racers here in Utah. Anyways, he charged me $200 for the following parts, I feel it was a very fair price.

Although it did take a little while, he forewarned me he was busy, so its all good to me. Either way, I picked them up on Christmas Eve and just bought some bolts at Lowe's to start bolting things back together.

For all of us who start bolting things back onto our trucks, it was an extremely surreal feeling to being bolting this crossmember back onto the truck. It only pumps new excitement into my body!

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

Looks really good. Your going to be glad you did the powder coating on the suspension and paint on the frame. Just a tip from when I assembled a powder hosted suspension is to make sure you remove the power paying where parts press in.

ok did this last message on a phone bad idea. So what I was saying is that where parts like press together you may have to remove the powder coating in those areas or it will not go together or brake something as the powder coating is really thick.

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

UPDATE:

Man, a lot has changed over the past few months, unfortunately, not much on the truck haha.

Long story short, been wanting to get back home to Hawaii for a few years, but never had the right job opportunity come up. Well all that changed and I accepted an offer on January 11th and began work in Hawaii on February 2nd. So in about 20 days I sold my properties, pack up our home, the truck, the family, and moved back to Hawaii.

Luckily, I found a rental with a garage and am under contract for a home that has one big enough for the project (garages are definitely a luxury here). So outside of wishing with all my might Gramps' truck was a rolling chassis when we moved it in and out of the Matson container, I am happy we could bring it along. I can't imagine not having it with me.

Now that the water has settled, my goal is to tack weld the rear end to the TAs and get the front disc brakes installed to be able to roll it around for the move into the new house. Which is in about a month.

And because posts without pictures are dumb, here is the truck the day we loaded it into the container. PS, only thing that broke was a headlight because a box fell on it. I am happy with that result after traveling 1000s of miles.

Wow that's a big change in a hurry! Knowing you moved the truck too at least means you haven't lost interest, looking forward for more updates after the dust settles.

Not every build thread has a relocation to Hawaii in the middle of it...

Good to here the truck made it mostly unscathed.

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

EVERYONE I need some serious help. First of all, no I am not dead haha.

It has been over 2 years since my last post and Gramps' truck is still with me and in my garage. I won't give all the reasons but I have a very serious inquiry that I hope to get real answers to.

What price am I looking at to have my truck restored for me?

I am talking that a 25' arrives at the doorstep of a restoration service and they handle it from there.

Looking for real world guesstimates.

And yes I know it will cost a hell of a lot, so please don't bother with "smart a" remarks haha. I wouldn't ask if I wasn't serious.

Ready. Set. Go!

PS...I'd love to say in the future "built not bought", but I'd also like to drive this truck and help my kids have memories in it like I did with Gramps

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

And nothing has changed since I shipped my truck out to Hawaii with me. Its a frame, body parts, and thats it.

Have a rear end but seriously wouldn't mind just buying one from the restorer to keep things simple.

I am literally talking taking the truck corpse and making it drive again with crate motor, single piece drive shaft, new electrical, etc etc

Hey Jason, That number can be all over the place. Do you know of a reputable shop that is local? You can talk to them about a budget and timeline. I'm throwing in the towel on my truck also and will be having someone do the rust repair. I picked a reputable shop with reasonably quick turn around times so that it won't get stuck in paint jail...

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

STILL LOOKING.

I am getting closer to being financially ready (lump sum of cash) to get my truck shipped to a shop and finished.

If anyone has any recommendations of shops anywhere along the west coast, please let me know of their names.

Looking to ship the truck to a shop before summer (May-ish).

Mahalo.

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

Well I figured that if the time is now, restoration shop or not, I will get back onto my Gramps build.

Got the DS UCA and LCA installed. Those bushings nuts are intense, but totally doable with the right sockets. I ran to O'reilly and got one for the uppers and lowers.

When reassembling I put the original spacer back onto the appropriate UCA shaft, but was curious if this will even make a difference haha. I assume once its all back together things will be drastically different. Either way I did it.

I also ordered larger u-bolts for the UCAs per the common recommendation on this forum; luckily, I didn't even have to expand the holes to make these fit.

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

For my UCA/LCA rebuild I used this killer thread by John Lee:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=599579

A perfect example of how valuable our forum is.

I used his notch technique and pregreased all bushing before install.

This really helped.

So last night I was doing the PS LCA and torquing it down, wrench slipped, finger bangs frame, and now broken pinkie lol.

Hope it heals quickly and nail falls off quick too.

Re: For Gramps (1970 C20 RestoMod)

HUGE UPDATE....kinda haha

Well I now think that I am the only person to have ever shipped their frame and body parts across the Pacific Ocean TWICE!! HAHA.

Due to Covid-19 and Hawaii's tourism industry I have relocated back to Anaheim, CA and brought Gramps' truck with me...in a 40' shipping container...again.

Gramps is now 92 years old and my goal to finish it for us to go on a drive before he passes now has a tighter window; but I am still hopeful I can figure this out and get it done.

I need some help, so please see my next post.
