Can't get the torque converter sit all the way

Hi Guys:
Are the tabs on TH350 gear pump gears and the grooves on the Torque converter standard (universal)? I changed the gear pump gears since the old ones were broken off and now I can't get the converter sit all the way. The converter is not original to the car.
Any tips or tricks?

Re: Can't get the torque converter sit all the way

Some times I have to hold my head to the left and hold my breath. But most the time I just clock the pump gear at 3 and 9 oclock and do the same with the converter. Lets me get close and a wiggle or two will let it line up. Never had any luck just shoving it an and spinning it to get tit lined up.

With the pump out of the case:
before you bolted the pump halves together did you put the pump onto the TC...as you bolt the two halves together you can put the pump body and gears onto the TC, than bolt the stator to the pump body using a alignment tool to make sure the two pump halves are aligned...than tightened the five bolts that hold the the two pump halves together....once the 5 bolts are tight, ensure the TC can turn making sure there is no binding of the gears...

With the pump in the case:
another thing you can do is take a small screw driver and try to turn the pump gears (be careful not to damage the pump seal) put the inner pump gear tabs at 12 and 6 o'clock so the tabs will line up with the TC hub (notches) as you try to install the TC onto the trans...

Are the pump gears are suppose to rotate easily? Because I pass use a thin screw driver to pass through the front seal, I can't easily rotate the pump gears.

Did you put the drive gear into the pump correctly?, the tabs are offset

Re: Can't get the torque converter sit all the way

well, this was my first time. Based on what I have read I just have to have the dot (arrow head) on the drive gear up (facing me when I am putting things back to together). I rotated the drive gear when I placed in and rotated it and it did rotated freely but now that the pump is installed on the transmission as I mentioned about I can't rotate the gear with a thin screw driver. Is t suppose to or there should be resistance? I guess this is my main question now if the gear pump gears are suppose to rotate freely at this stage or not.

The inner gear will have some resistance when you try to turn it with a screw driver. Can you get the gear to move at all ? If you can not you may have to take the pump back out and take the two halves apart Than slide the pump with the gears in the pump body onto the torque converter to see if it goes onto the pump ok.

Re: Can't get the torque converter sit all the way

In the pic you will notice on the pump gears, mark/dot are showing on both inner and outer gears. That’s the way both need to be installed. Notice the pump is mounted onto the tc to ensure proper movement of the gears.

Re: Can't get the torque converter sit all the way

Here in this pic it shows the pump body with the gears on the torque converter with the stator on top of the pump with the alignment tool (three hose claps). Tighten the five bolts that holds the second gear spring retainer to the stator and than rotate the pump. Does it bind and will not turn ?
The torque converter is flat on the bench. The pic was turned when it was uploaded. Thanks

Make sure the pump body o-ring is not on the pump when aligning/tightening the pump together.

Re: Can't get the torque converter sit all the way

Thank you. The gear set that I bought had a arrow head on inner gear with tabs on it but the other gear does not have any marking on it. I guess I tear it apart again. Can I use my original other gear since I just need to replace the inner gear?

Re: Can't get the torque converter sit all the way

They are sold as a set. most likely the outer gear was damaged when the inner gear was broken...best to use both new gears as a set...

Was the engine started when this happened ? Take a good look at the pump itself, where the gears ride, the pump maybe bad to....look also at the gear mating surface of the stator for damage/wear.
Also, you need to check the TC hub to make sure nothing is wrong with it....check the bushing in the pump body to make sure its not tore up in any way....try to install just the pump onto the TC without the gears first just to make sure its not the bushing holding up the TC from going into the pump.

Good Luck...
