adj. a "adj.vacuum advance"?

don't know exactly how to go about adjusting a new gm vac. advance canister. didn't necessaryily need one but the one i have on the dist. now has the nipple coming out the side of the canister instead of out the end.bought a new chrome cover only to discover i have the type of canister that has the tube or nipple coming out the side.so......question is not how to mount it,i'm pretty sure how to do that,.....but what entails setting the vacuum to the optimum setting w/ the slotted holes?....does pushing the unit in/out give me less/more vacuum? right now i believe i'm running 'round 8deg. btdc.......i'm a novice w/ this whole timing thing.thanks guys.....

Im not familiar with the proform can(link didnt open). I have used the crane can several times, & know that it puts out 22 degress (crankshaft), if not limited at all. The bracket should have a stamping (crane says 11, which means 11 degrees dist advance as checked on a machine), or 22 degrees crankshaft. that needs to be cut back to approx 10-12 degrees (crankshaft), with the limiter cam that crane supplies.......or weld a tab on the arm, in front of the rod to limit the travel to approx .110-.120. then turn the screw in the can 7-9 turnsCC to add a little tension. This will make the can back off faster under a load. I used the last method, & am set @ 10 degrees of vac advance, & hooked to full manifold source at the carb. the initial timing is 10-11, with 22 degrees advance in the mechanical(aftermarket weights), & is all in about 3200 rpms + the 10 degrees on the can, timing @ idle is 20-21 degrees with the can hooked up. good luck, crazyL
