50 GMC S10 swapped bed ideas?

Used the S10 bed in my 50 GMC swap as many have done. Truck is patina. What have you done to cover up the donor color?

i use undercoating. this one already had undercoating so it just needed touch up. remember to scuff or that will just come off the shiny paint. on previous trucks I have also put down wood and factory bed strips over the metal. make sure you drill a couple holes for water to drain.

nice patina on your truck.

I'd probably be happy with flat black on the bed floor, maybe with a bit or brown or orange mixed in.

It would be a hard piece to do a faux patina paint job on with shape of the floor

I'd just do a mixed bag of camo paint so the blue doesn't glare out and call it good, You could use spray on bedliner but along with looking new and out of place it is a pain to deal with when you get tired of the worn out look and want a nice looking truck.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: 50 GMC S10 swapped bed ideas?

After installing new cowl pieces, new cab corners, a new rear roll pan, and wanting to return my tailgate back to its original look (patina) I did this,

1. paint area flat black
2. paint red oxide wherever you want over the flat black (all or part)
3. mix up Rustoleum to match your truck color as close as you can (green in your case)

Let dry and start sanding to your desired look. When you get down to the black color, stop, as you don't want the blue S10 bed to show through.

Once completed to your liking, apply flat back, and/or red oxide on a rag and wipe over areas to create a 'natural' look.

Here is a pic of mine now, and if you look close, you can see that the cowl pieces and cab corners aren't perfect, but I think they look close enough to the rest of the truck.

Experiment on a piece of metal to get the feel for it. I enjoyed the process as it was something I really have never done before, and remember, you can't do it wrong, because it is a Patina truck.

Re: 50 GMC S10 swapped bed ideas?

tempest nailed it. I would use a final paint that is easy to sand or you will ned to let it sit longer to cure up hard. park the truck on an incline, run the garden hose at the uphill end, then wet sand like he advises. with the waterfall effect to keep the sandpaper clean it goes pretty quickly. try to get some dark red oxide as it will look older that way. shoot a good thick layer of the black so if you break through you have a bit of depth to work with or maybe you wanna break through a bit so there is a little black showing here and there.
nice job on the floor

Re: 50 GMC S10 swapped bed ideas?

here is a pic of the roll pan after I came up with the truck color mixing up some Tremclad colors (Rustoleum for our American friends)

This is when the experimentation starts.

Hope this helps

Re: 50 GMC S10 swapped bed ideas?

Painted the wheel tubs flat black and cut a rubber mat to fit.. Needed the extra weight in the back anyway.
