Help Just purchased 69 Truck

Hello, I just purchased a 69 C20 pick up truck. $500 has what appears so sound like a good running 350 and 350 tranny. BM floor shift, Carter Carb, HEI, etc.. needs a few minor pieces This is a first time purchasing a truck and the owner let it go so cheap because it hasnt been registered for about 5 years. I noticed on the title that it is registered as a commercial vehicle and looks like the fees are sky high.. Does anyone know if I can change the registration to register it as a non- Commercial vehicle? Does look like the truck was ever used as a commercial vehicle? Im in california and was looking at the DMV website and makes mention that the GVW. must be 10000 lbs in order for it to be deemed commercial. Does anybody know the GVW of the truck. I dont plan on attaching a trailer on it. I just bought it to play with it a bit and use it for hardware trips I just hope I didnt get into a big mess with registering etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated

yea, you can change the comercial plates to non comercial no problem. At least it wasn't for me.

What part of West Covina are you? I grew up in Glendora, and thats where my burb was originally from too.

If it is a Suburban it should be a listed as a wagon and not have the weight fees. I have a couple fo trucks that I would love not to have weight fees on as they are never used for hauling anything but when I talked to the DMV they said I could not do it.

Damn!!! I found an old registration card that stated the person was paying $280 on registration fees per year.
Its 5 years past due and DMV said they only go back 3 years. even if thats the case, thats 280 x 3 plus any penalty fees etc....

I hope that is not the case or else I will have to part the truck and sell by parts.

All the pickup trucks are considered commercial and have to pay the weight fees. You used to be able to put a camper shell on them and not pay weight fees but they did away with that I am told. Here is the weight fee schedule for California:

Weight Fees for Commercial Vehicles with Declared Gross Vehicle Weight 10,000 lbs. or Less Unladen Weight (Vehicle Code §9400)

All fees are subject to changes in the law and may vary depending on your particular application or transaction. Use fee information for an estimation of fees due only.

The Weight Fees in this section shall be paid in addition to any other registration fees for the registration of any commercial vehicle that operates with unladen weight.

Weight fees for pickup trucks and electric vehicles are calculated under this section.

Whenever a camper is temporarily attached to a motor vehicle designed to transport property, the motor vehicle shall be subject to the fees in this section. The camper shall be deemed to be a load and the fees shall be based on the unladen weight of the motor vehicle without the camper.

Your truck must be in the 5000-6000 pound range and the weight fee is 154.00. Time to put the truck on a diet and get it reweighed. You should be able to get it down to the 4000-5000 pound range and save about 74.00 a year. I was told you can put historic plates on the truck and not pay weight fees but then you cannot haul anything in the truck.

Thanks EXTD. Thats sounds more realistic (According to what I read and what I noticed on the old registration)

I just saw a 1970 c10 very nice condition on craigslist for $1,500 didnt know they go so cheap. I might just strip this 69 and sell it for parts. or get a good condition body and dump the drivetrain from the 69 into it.

I have a 64 Cadillac and the car and parts are super expensive compared to these trucks. I just pruchased a home and promise my wife that I would not fill up the new home with Toys again... but here I go Its just too tempting and easy to work on. Ohh well she was raised by a hot rod family so she'll get over it.. Hahahah!

Yes it would but if you can get it under the 4000 pound mark it would be a lot cheaper. My old 72 Chevy longbed came in at 3998 which means that the weight fees were 24.00.

Just found out it will cost me $996 to change ownership and regristration updated.

Will be $450 for registering as historical vehicle.. But this way I can drive it daily? regulation says only in parades , etc...

My 69 says housecar on the title and I pay no weight fees. It cost $69 last year

Just another reason not to live in California. You guys have to deal with a lot of B.S. when it comes to registering vehicles.
