door hinge replacement

any of you guys have any tips or tricks on replacing the door hinges?
my driver door is dropping a good bit when opening and im getting tired of slamming it shut.
im not replacing the bushings as im sure the holes are wallered out so im remplacing the full assemblies

I find it easier to remove the gauges to access the bolt from under the dash You can try using a floor jack to hold the door in place and try to replace the hinges one at a time

Here is my post on replacing the door hinges. Once I had the correct gm pins and bushings it wasn't too bad when I used a homemade platform for the door made out of scrap 2 x 4s. I would not assume that your hinges cannot be reused - the bushings will be worn out but it is a lot easier to replace them than the whole hinge.

no you don't need to remove the nose to get them out just being able to move the door ive done it with extensions and swvels

I did this on my 81 C20 drivers door a couple months ago. I removed the door and left the hinges attached to the cab. Cut the pins to remove them. Drilled the pin holes out so the bushings would fit snug in the holes(I used the bushings with the splines). I didn't have a big enough drill bit, had to file the holes to size. Cleaned up any burs and wire brushed grease and rust. Installed bushings, outer half of hinge and pins. I usually put a spot weld on the end of the pin. Reinstall the door and align. I also got a new striker as mine was shot. The door shuts like it is new, no lifting and slamming, bouncing and rattles when driving. I still have to do my passenger door and need new door and window seals but that won't happen until it is painted, whenever that happens.

Most of the kits I've bought had both sets of bushings and purchase them from any parts house.

The Dorman hinge pin kit has oversize pins and bushings, as well as the standard size bushings. I bought them first but did not want to ream out the holes in the hinge, so I bought the genuine GM pins and bushings which worked best for me. So, you can buy a Dorman kit from any parts store and check it out on your truck. You may find that you need the stock size parts, and I prefer GM OEM whenever possible.

I used the Dorman kit from Advance Auto. It came with the standard size bushings as well as the oversized ones. I opted to use the oversized ones. Just drill to the size recommended, and install as you would any door pins. They worked perfectly, and much cheaper than GM ones. They seem to be a little heavier-duty, as well.

These are the GM part numbers, you should be able to go to your local dealership and have them order some.

Mine had a small small spot weld on the pin so I had to grind that off first and then tap the pin out

If you buy the Dorman pin/bushing kit the bushings will be oversize, which might take up the slack in your worn out hinge holes.

You did not say what year but I see you 67, the 73-87 trucks pretty close I think the dash area little bit different near the hinge. might be a little easier.

My Dorman pins didn't fit the included bushings, I wound up buying OEM.
