Transmission advice

So, I have a 2006 LQ4 and 2WD 4L80. I plan on running my C10 (all time) AWD. I’ve picked up a NG149 transfer case and Denali front diff 3.73 to match the rear. I’m being told that I need to swap the 2WD for a 4WD as just swapping the output shaft isn’t an option. With that being said, I’m not opposed to going with a manual transmission but it must be a six speed if I’m going that route, but I’m afraid that’s not going to be an option with the AWD setup. The transfer case is being converted to 32 spline to make it work with the 4L80.

Advice and options appreciated before I buy something that I don’t need.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve seen it tagged as both NP, NV and NG, depending on what you look up and parts lists, but it’s the same transfer case. I haven’t figured that “which is it” question out yet either. Truck is a 1968 C10 swb. LQ4 with btr cam, 243heads ls6 springs, 8.1 injectors so far. Truck is in pieces right now and not really proud of it’s current condition. Thanks for the greeting and feedback.

Re: Transmission advice

I have a lq4 out of an 06 that is 4wd. I need to go the opposite route and convert the 4l80 to 2wd. I was under the assumption you can change the output shaft and housing to accomplish this. Not sure why you cant do the same to convert yours to 4wd. As far as the t-case that came out of the truck it was a NP265. If only we were closer we could make a deal and solve each others issue.

I was under the same impression, but was told the entire transmission would have to be rebuilt in order to do this as it's not a simple swap out the tail shaft/housing type application. Was hoping for more information on this one. Anyone?

I wanted a self contained all time AWD transfer case without the need for additional electronics. From my research, this is the best option. Due to the input shaft being a 27spline for the 4L60, I'm having our machine shop at work convert it to 32spline for my application. There are a couple of people who sell the modified part for $600 on this site.

As far as the 6speed, I'm not sure if a standard used T56 will hold the torque and I don't have the funds for a custom built bulletproof transmission. Was hoping to pick up something used or trade with my 4L80. The more I find out now, the better prepared I'll be when it comes time to shell out the money.

So I guess depending on the two scenarios, I'm trying to go with the least expensive, yet most practical, option.

Re: Transmission advice

Yes you do have to tear down the whole thing to change the output shaft as it's at the rear of the trans and you work from front to back.

I’m not ready for tackling something like that so it looks like I’ll be searching for another 4wd unit. Thanks!
