My First C60..

Good day everyone.. Bought my first c60 this weekend and the rear end has updated Dayton style rims but the front still has the split bead rims.im wondering what my options are for replacement rims or updating to 10 lug all the way around. Right now I just want to get it running and driving. Then make it into a tow pig for my truck and a camper and maybe a big gn trailer to haul my buddies and mine trucks to shows that we attend. Preciate the help. Crappy pics. Sorry.

Re: My First C60..

You can pick up the 22.5 rims pretty cheap used, about $50 and I've seen new on ebay for $120. That's your cheapest route. Changing over buddy style will be significant and very costly. Stick with Daytons. They look cool anyway.

Can I just use one of the daytons on the rear for the front? I didn't know if there was anything special on the front which may be the reason the split rims are still on it.

The rims are interchangable. Just turned turned around depending on position. Sounds like you have the original 20" up front and newer tubeless 22.5 in rear. Yes, they will swap, but you can't put the 20" with the 22.5. The spacer ring in rear won't mate.

Gotcha.. I need to look at the fronts to see the size. I haven't gotten it home yet. Too big for my trailer so looking for alternatives to get it here. Can't wait to start working on it and get it back running. With a 700 high rear gear I don't think I'll be going anywhere dast though. LoL.

Re: My First C60..

A lot of good information from this forum. I've got a 1970 c60 with the 366. Drive it all the time. I've probably done more than I should have but I was wanting dependability and driveability. If you have questions, just ask. Congratulations on the big truck. You'll love it.

Thanks!! I want it to be my toy hauler but pretty sure I'm going to have to change axles to get it there to something a little smaller but we shall see I guess. I'm with you on dependability and drivability.

Re: My First C60..

There is really no need to change axles, just put in an overdrive if you need more speed.

Get a 5-Speed with an OD or install an Aux Box.

Or try to find a Rear with Higher Gears.

Is it a 5-Speed, 2-Speed Rear now?

Yes it's a 5spd with 2 spd rear. 7.17 - 9.77 gear ratio according to the spid sticker.

Re: My First C60..

Going off those numbers you're probably going to want to keep an eye out for a Brownie box or a higher ratio differential carrier. My '61 5000 GMC has 6.50 - 9.04 for the rear. 5th gear direct in HI was about 35+/-mph at 2000rpm. Put a 3spd Spicer 5531 with a 27% overdrive behind the main transmission, picked it up to 45-50mph.

Very cool truck! Highly recommend keeping those heavy axles and Daytons. A C60 on 1-ton axles just don't look right...

Thanks!! I was looking for a newer semi rear end with alot lower gears to put in the originals place with 10 lug rims then conversation the front hubs to 10 lug. Seen a video where they did a bus like that. I wanna keep it heavy duty but I wanna lower it and put it on air and make it drivable so I can haul my pro street square and my brothers Vette to long distance shows. I was also considering a nv4500 swap as well. Hope that makes sense.. here a pic of my toy!!

Re: My First C60..

NV4500s were only used up to the C3500HD’s if I’m not mistaken. The price also jumps because of the name. You would be better off looking for a medium duty 5 or 6 speed with an overdrive. It will hold up to what you throw at it, likely be cheaper, and will be an easier swap.

Got any model numbers I can look for? I was also wondering if it's possible to change out gears in the rear to lower it down to the 400ish range but still keep the 2spd portion for take off and what not. Eventually it will get a bigger engine with EFI like the 96-00 454s. I wanna be able to take it across country pull my toy or camper.
