The first door we had was metal, the floor rotted under it because the deck and door never had flashing installed around them. The door itself was solid.

The backside of the house only has sun the first few hours of the day before the sun goes over the house and it's in shade.

Speaking of doors... see anything wrong here?

I jumped more than fell, and landed on my feet. What would have hurt was if that sheet of plywood had landed on me!

I started putting the roof on, on Friday. Against the house I cut back the wrap and installed the rolled rubber flashing, then drip edge, then felt, then shingles.

I had to finish the framing and plywood on the left side.

It's really hard to see, but the sides got proper step flashing. On the top (and sides) the tar paper when up the wall. The 2nd to last layer of shingles went up to the top, then 90* flashing went on, then the last layer of shingles, then counter flashing went on the wall.

Last few. I wasn't able to get good pics of it done, as it was dark when I finished on Sunday and it's about dark when I get home now. This weekend I hope to get the soffit up. I also have to get the cap shingles on the corners. Ran out of daylight.

Hey, I'm done with the roof part! Wohoo. Finished the corner caps and started getting the underside done. I also finally found a place that stocked pre bent aluminum for the fascia.

Ugh, Another "really" moment.

So it was obvious the door was added after the house was build, you know, with the trim nailed over the siding an all, but I didn't even think they half assed it this bad. There's a stud on one side, but the door is just trim nailed into the sheeting on the other side.

Another easy project that I'm going to have to replace the door and pull the sheeting and frame the damn thing correctly.

I brought home a couple siding samples that looked great in the little square on paper, but bringing a couple pieces home was nothing like what I wanted, and the wife absolutely hated it. We were going for a medium green, but what I brought home looked more like a pale green that looked gray in most lighting. Back to the drawing board on that next Friday. So maybe some of the greens I looked at small 1" square samples of that looked way too dark were actually good colors? Bringing Jena with me this time.

Took last weekend off to hang out with my friends for once, but the weekend before was pretty busy.

I got around to replacing the rotten door. It sucks because I replaced it in 2010.

It "rotted weird."

I knew I sealed the crap out of the bottom. So, water got in by actually rotting out the door bottom. It swelled and shrank and eventually rotted. So, because of that, the seal was no longer good, so water got down in passed the door into the tray below and down into the floor

While not terrible, it did get water damaged again, so I went ahead and replaced the sub floor... again...

Then I found this mess (which I was expecting...)

Luckily, they did use at least one full height stud on the left side, so I just needed to create a new header, support it on the left side and add back the missing full length stud and support on the right side. Also, because they did such a half ass job nailing the sheeting (Some only had 8-10 nails for an ENTIRE SHEET) there was a major wave next to the door so I replaced that sheet too. Hopefully, this wavy area is it... it was noticeable before the siding was removed and the rest of the siding around the whole house looks pretty flat.

So I decided to try wrapping the doors in a rubber membrane this time with an adhesive backing. I read a lot info and watched quite a few videos and decided that on the main door I wanted to go with the "let it drain" method by creating a pan out of the membrane and leaving a little area in the corners "open".

The first step was to wrap the doors fully, making sure to overlap from bottom to top (like a roof shingle).

*My phone camera sucks and makes some weird looking angles, both openings were almost dead nuts level (which actually surprised me..)

The next step was to create a "pan". I laid a bead of silicone along the edge of the door and in the middle-ish area and up the sides about 6".

Then, I tore the backing paper off +/- the width of the door and laid it upside down on top of the silicone I just put down. Then, I laid silicone as you see again, this time leaving a "gap" at the edge of the large door (In all the years I've been at the house, the garage overhang actually keeps the door almost completely dry and this door had no rot when I removed it).

I then noticed the bottom of the small door was funky so I laid some silicone down the middle as well.

Here's how to create the pan... you now have the membrane sticky side up. Measure the height of the pan (or whatever the height of the adjacent floor will be if you don't want so see the membrane) cut it, pull the paper and stick it to the back of the door sill. Then fold the sides over and you've created a water tight membrane under the door.

We've had a couple good/long rainstorms the past couple weeks and so far so good!

The suckiest thing for both doors is the original french door was some custom order size that we had to pay like a grand for in 2010. Wasn't about to pay that again, so I decided it would be worth the extra sheetrock and paint work to go with a "standard" sized french door and went with the 72x82. It was only $400 vs $1,000 and I can buy off the shelf doors if I ever notice rot again instead of having to replace the entire thing. Even with this size, I still had to fill in the gap with a 2x4 on one side and the top as wall as a 1/2" sheet of plywood to help fill the gap. But the whole point of the new roof and new door was to never do this again

I haven't even shared this on facespace yet! You guys get the first preview of the new siding color, Southern Cypress. It was hard to find a green my wife and I both liked and I think this one nails it. It's on order and should be in next week.

The color looks a lot better in person, almost has a gray look in the pics, its very much like a 50's medium green. They had some 8" dutch lap in stock (I wanted 9") so I bought few pieces and chopped it up to make sure we liked the color.

...and I have a mess! The back has the most tedious stuff. I've been fixing/replacing all of the lights/electrical etc stuff with the correct siding boxes, where most of it was just screwed overtop of the siding

And I'll definitely be switching to the 9' wrap for the rest of the house! The short stuff sucks, I was just trying to use up what I bought.
