Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
And I mean round trip. 250 miles each way for let's say a part that you don't need but an easy flip for $500. A set of buddy buckets for $200? Nothing bulky you can drive you wife's Honda. Selling would be easy you don't have to sit on it. Just wondering if I'm the only one or not. Matt

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
Is this really a question, lol?? I love a road trip, so if I could make money doing it, in the comfortable vehicle, that's a no brainer to me.

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
Assume for the sake of argument that you are on a road where you can crank along at 70 MPH. 500 miles turns out to take a little over 7 hours, minus BS and loading time. If you get 50 MPG, it's gonna be $20 for gas. Deducting fuel costs, you are making $480 in, hopefully, one day. That's just short of $70 an hour. Not a bad day's wages. Now, if you had to drive through the Sepulveda Pass on the 405 FWY on a Friday afternoon, you'd be crazy. I have in the past driven 1100 miles in one day, but that was 44 years ago, when I was young and immortal. And it was through the midwest; I've had my commute of 47 miles extend to 4 hours, given local conditions.
So, yeah, I guess I would!

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
I'm always up for a trip too. I ask because financially we are all different. I see guys spending big bucks multiple trucks restorations etc. I'm sure time is more valuable to some. I make $30 an hour after 23 years but work 56 hours a week. Some guys might only drive for that hard to find part for a project. My kids were at their moms so I hit the road just to make some bucks. Plus it was about 95 deg in reno

BLT gmc, aka "Bruce", just drove 23 hrs one way non-stop, spent the night in Yuma AZ, last night; today we loaded a 69 K10 behind his buddies Duramax and off they went back to Iowa. Tad over 1500 miles each way!
Hats off to him |

Left from Pa. to Ga.(1500 miles round trip non stop) to pick up a short frame. Went in my son's buddies 67 Ford highboy with a 300-6 and 4:56 gears. The kidney's suffered the most.

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
Thanks everyone. I posted so I'd have something to read when I got home. I don't have room to buy and sell vehicles and I wouldn't drive 500 miles to buy a truck for a $500 profit but I do by and sell parts for walking around money. It wasn't buddy buckets just an example. I got a really cool carpac wood roof rack for $120. I sold a few over the years, one for $1200 but this one is smaller.

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
I have driven days just to ski for a few hours and that was more than once!
I used to drive about 3 hours each way, just for a few seconds of fun---skydiving---and I've done that dozens of times! If I had the room, I'd go get buddy buckets. |

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
Ive actually done that for a set of buddy's. A GMC some girl was wanting to sell that had a ton of goodies along with the buddy's. She was selling the whole truck but man was it a rust bucket. Also had a really cool old canopy on it with the slatted side windows that cranked open.
I told her I was sorry but the truck was too rusted to drag home, which was true. She said she was just going to have the scrappers come pick it up. I told her I was interested in some of the parts if she was going to go ahead and have the truck scrapped. She said sure no problem, just take whatever you need, please don't make a big mess. So we stripped it of every cool useable part, even used a sawzall to remove the side windows on the canopy. She didn't want to charge me anything, just happy to see someone could use the parts. I told her no that wouldn't be fare to her because, while junk to her, it had value to me. I gave her two hundred bucks for everything we took. Which was a great deal for me and gave her some money she wasn't expecting.

Good job CG. Glad you paid her also, most people would not have done that.

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
I once drove from Kansas City to Pittsburgh, PA (850 miles each way) with a buddy to buy a 69 Charger. We left Friday after work and we got back Sunday evening.

Re: Would you drive 500 miles for $500?
I wouldn't. My time has become more valuable than money and 10+ hours for a parts flip isn't worth it to me. That kills an entire Saturday.
After I blow $50 on fuel and another $15-20 on food it drops more. Now, if it was a part I really wanted for my truck and it was a great price, yes, I would make the trip.
