Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
I have a '72 C10 Pickup that currently has a 250 Inline 6 that i want to change to a 350. I would like to keep the 4 speed manual transmission that is in the truck and i was wondering if that bellhousing bolts right up to a 350? i heard somewhere that i can use the 6 cylinder mounts and use them to mount the V8 in the rearward position? is this true? and if it is, does the driveshaft length change? any information on this would be helpful, thanks

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
You can do that.It won`t change the driveshaft length because the trans stays put.You need a V8 flywheel and clutch z-bar.

The right hand motor stand or perch is specific to a 292. Let me know if you do a swap and want to sell it.

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
on the 250 6cly just unbolt the motor and drop the v8 in place, you could even bolt a BB there (might have to clearance the firewall though). You will need a v8 clutch ball stud for the v8 4x4 or modify the 6cyl one. It is an easy wap.

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
I was under the inpresion that the motor mounts moved forward to the next set of holes in the frame. As long as the tailshaft of the tranny doesn't move fore of aft your driveshaft length will not change.

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
I've done this swap several times, it's so easy, the V8 almost bolts itself in! Engine mounting is a piece of cake, areas that cause headaches are: above mentioned clutch linkage, and exhaust system. Literally everything else bolts right up.

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
So for my 64 would it be the same? Use the more forward set of holes on the frame for the new mounts and my drive shaft should still be good?

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
2 wheel or 4 wheel drive. i just did the 4wd 292 to 350 swap and the mounts are different. I had to change the crossmember and go to the V-8 mounts. The 2 wheel drive looks a little easier. good luck. s.

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
if you aren't relocating the tranny, then just leave it in the truck, and bolt the new engine to that tranny, and bolt the engine down where is lands.
It is THAT sinple. On a 2 wheel drive, it won't be correct, but it'll be fine. Get a fan shroud for a small block 4X4. On a 4X4, it'll be correct as if it had a small block from day one. |

"On a 2 wheel drive, it won't be correct, but it'll be fine. Get a fan shroud for a small block 4X4.
On a 4X4, it'll be correct as if it had a small block from day one." Longhorn Man is correct on 4x4 I6 or V8 use same mounts. The engine looks like it is sitting to far back but it is correct although their is no room for an HEI dist. On a 2wd a I6 is mounted in the rear position just like the 4x4, but the V8 is mounted 3" forward. This is done by simply switching the frame mounts left-right and right-left and then mounting them in the front holes in the frame. I have done this swap before it is very simple. The swap I did was with a TH350 trans so I just replaced the short tailshaft with a long tailshaft trans from a 73 and newer truck which made up for the 3" differance so I could use the original driveshaft. Also the 292 does have a special right mount all to its own. |

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
Flywheel should be the same, can reuse that if wanted. You don't want to move the tranny, so use the 6 cylinder frame mounts bolted where they are, change the right one to a 250 mount. Drops right in. If you have good cab mounts, HEI will fit, but it will be tight.

Re: Inline 6 to V8 swap w/ 4 speed
Sorry to bring back an old thread but it seems like everyone in this thread knows what they are talking about. I am swapping a 250 inline 6 out of my 78 GMC K-15 for a 350 out of a 78 Chevrolet C-30. I have already got the 250 out and the 350 in the frame. But the frame mounts don't seem to line up with the bolt holes in the 350 mounts. It is driving me slowly insane. Any input would be appreciated.
