When to say when on a 66 tailgate
Wish I could say a Win but Im at a loss, got my tailgate from the blaster and the PO did a number on it. I started today trying to drill out the spot welds and see if I can get under the problem areas which are too many I think now. Maybe Im approaching it wrong but either way it cant be easy getting this thing right. I hate to but it might be repo time on this at $500.

Re: When to say when on a 66 tailgate
Ive been looking to see if others have had to make repairs on this level to their tailgates and so far I havent seen any. If I were to keep trying, what is the right approach? From what I have seen there are no patch panels for these areas so I'd have to make them myself. And in order to get behind to remove rust Id have to remove the entire top and bottom rolled over portions. So that would mean a long cut all the way across the top and bottom?

If you had to pay a shop to make those repairs you would quickly surpass the price of a new one. how is the quality of the reproduced part?

Re: When to say when on a 66 tailgate
Hey Robert! thanks for the reply. I have never ordered or seen a repop on it but I was planning to order from Classic Parts here
https://www.classicparts.com/1958-66...tinfo/10-035/# Before I threw in the towel I was curious of what the shop would do? Cut the entire top along the top ridge and bottom ridge and fix the cut panels, clean out the rust, epoxy primer the inner portions, then reweld along the cutlines that run the length of the top and bottom and spot weld it all back up? Maybe the repop is worth the hassle? |

Wow ,that looked like a nice gate . I found similar things with my 72 gate , went thru a few before I was happy .
