Post 5 lug axle to 6 lug?

Can a 5 lug axle be converted to a 6 lug by simply putting the 6 lug axles in place of the 5 lug axles? I guess what I am wanting to know is do the 5's have diferent spline patterns or are they the same? Or can the ring and pinion be placed from the 5 lug into the 6 lug housing? Wanting to use the gears and posi from the 5 in the 4x4. Thanks for your help.
